Mehdi Abeid concerns lead Algeria to prepare replacement

Concerns over Mehdi Abeid’s recovery have prompted Algeria to prepare a replacement for the African Cup of Nations.

The Newcastle midfielder broke a toe in training when away with his national set-up in November and two months later there is still no sign of a return with United.

Reports in the Algerian press say that national coach Christian Gourcuff will shortly put Medhi Abeid through a fitness test, and if he doesn’t pass it, then they will draft in Adlene Guedioura.

He is one of seven on their reserve list and the 29 year old midfielder is ironically one of Alan Pardew’s new players at Crystal Palace, though he is currently at Watford on loan.

While it would be a big blow for Abeid, it could be in Newcastle’s favour if the player fails the fitness test but recovers in time to play a part while both Cheick Tiote and Papiss Cisse are taking part in the African Nations finals.
