Jamie Carragher Says Newcastle Should Never Be Out Of Top 8

Emotions were running high on Monday night but not just in the away end, in the TV studio Jamie Carragher was getting very animated about the mess Newcastle United are in.

The former Liverpool defender believes that United should always be competing for Europe and never be out of the top eight.

It is good to hear a neutral view that puts things into perspective and Carragher also believes that when Newcastle were qualifying for the Champions League under Sir Bobby, he doesn’t think it should be classed as over-achieving.

While in the modern day, as well as competing regularly in that top eight, Jamie Carragher said on Sky Sports that if then one year Newcastle really pushed on and got into the Champions League, then it would be fantastic – though shouldn’t be seen as such a massive surprise.

“Newcastle under Bobby Robson were getting into the Champions League and you couldn’t say they were over-achieving, but I think of Newcastle as a top eight club.

“They should be pushing for Europe and if they got in the Champions League one year you’d say it was fantastic.

“Alan Pardew almost got them there when they finished fifth and he was Manager of the Year, but Newcastle should always be a top eight team at least.

“To see them bottom of the league with Burnley and only goals scored separating them is bad.”

Carragher went on to say that things are really bad for Newcastle and says that the current problems would be understandable for a promoted club but not one like Newcastle United.

The pundit adding that with an international break looking, it is often a time when clubs are more likely to think about potentially changing managers;

“When you’re in such bad form every game looks difficult and I think it is bad. It is Newcastle, it is not a promoted team or a small team.

“The problem he (Pardew) has got is that the next game is a tough game away at Swansea and with the way they are playing you would expect Swansea to win that.

“Then the problem all managers have is the international breaks. The two week break is always the time when a club will look at it. It gives them time to bring someone else in if he was thinking of making that decision. Unfortunately for managers, they come around early in the season.”

Carragher’s words underline for me just what a good job Mike Ashley and Alan Pardew have done in demoralising so many Newcastle fans, that supporters start and believe that our club isn’t one capable of competing, despite the third highest support in England and featuring in the Deloitte top 20 biggest turnovers in the World year after year.

Whereas those on the outside such as Carragher and many others, see Newcastle as a club that could and should be competing, at the very least in that top eight every season.
