Gabriel Obertan Headline Is Three Years Too Late

A headline this morning made me smile – Newcastle United could be lumbered with unhappy winger Gabriel Obertan.

Surely this is three years too late for a winger who has never looked up to the job.

Obertan is one of countless, especially younger, players to be given way too long contracts. With Newcastle United seemingly wanting to project an image of signing up talented young players on long contracts, with little quality control as to exactly how worthy of such long contracts these players were.

Gabriel Obertan was given a five year deal after looking totally out of his depth at Manchester United, arriving at St.James’ Park on reported £25,000 a week wages. No wonder there is no chance of Newcastle shifting him.

Obertan is still contracted to Newcastle until 2016, the same as Shane Ferguson, Haris Vuckic and Romain Amalfitano, while Bigirimana and Dummett are signed on until 2017. Even Nile Ranger was given a five year deal!

Newcastle United are suffering from a chaotic transfer strategy with allegedly the manager having very little say in it, a recipe for disaster although many of you will no doubt be thinking extra input from Alan Pardew would only make it worse.

My young son often points to how big our squad is compared to the opposition, on the back of the match programme.

He naively thinks that this must mean we have some kind of an advantage. However, when half the list of players is taken up by those who Newcastle are stuck with, young and old, it is a sobering realisation.
