French Midfielder Admits He’s ‘Flattered’ By Newcastle Interest
There was much coverage of a claimed interest in a Clement Grenier transfer to Newcastle in January.
It was reported that an offer had been turned down by Lyon and the amount described as an ‘insult’, with the player also said to have turned down United.
When asked about the January transfer speculation about a Newcastle move, Grenier has now admitted that he was ‘flattered’ by Newcastle’s interest in the window;
“It is always flattering to know that big clubs are interested in you, you never want that to stop.
“The most important thing to me is to keep the consistency on the pitch so that I am worth that kind of attention.
“For me though, Lyon have always been a big club and there is still consistency there despite a change of status compared to some other clubs in the league.”
Lyon are currently in sixth place and some seven points away from a Champions League qualifying place.
If the French club fail to qualify then it is very likely that a player such as Grenier will leave, though if Newcastle are to land him then they would have to fight off a number of other clubs.
With Alan Pardew’s claim this week that he ‘hopes to bring in three of four great players’ in the summer, we await with interest to see just how serious Mike Ashley is in backing his manager’s statement.
