Mike Ashley’s Sell-Off Plans Questioned By Fans Using Freedom Of Information Act

News this morning that the Newcastle United Supporters Trust (NUST) has used the Freedom Of Information act to question Mike Ashley’s latest land sell-off plans.

[intlink id=”40905″ type=”post”]We recently reported[/intlink] that Ashley was quietly trying to sell the club owned long lease on land opposite St.James’ Park, a move which if successful would mean it was almost impossible for any future expansion of St.James’ Park in the years ahead, no matter if things were on the up for NUFC any time in the decades/generations to come. Now however, NUST have approached Newcastle City Council who are legally obliged to reveal certain information about Ashley’s plans.

This is the NUST statement;

The Trust has responded to fan concerns by requesting details regarding Mike Ashley’s attempts to sell an NUFC owned lease on land next to St.James’ Park.

The land is opposite the Gallowgate end and Newcastle United have a long lease from Nexus, having purchased it under the Hall/Shepherd regime for potential ground expansion as part of a wider development.

The club had quietly put the lease up for sale hoping for a quick sale away from the glare of publicity.

Once though NUST brought the Ashley move into the public domain, Newcastle supporters have reacted with dismay at the fact that if the land is built on then it would make it almost impossible to ever expand the St.James’ Park capacity, no matter what the future holds.

It is believed that if the land is developed it would be used for either a hotel or student accommodation.

NUST Chairman, Norman Watson, has written to Newcastle City Council using the Freedom of Information Act as follows;

‘I would be grateful if you could provide the following information under the Freedom of Information Act;

 The name, address ,telephone number and contact details of all organisations who have contacted the Council and requested information / sought guidance from a planning perspective with regard to the St James Park site.

 Please provide this information within the statutory 20 day period as prescribed under the FOI Act.’

We will report back once we have further details.
