Ex-Newcastle Cult Hero ‘Newcastle Should Be Top 8 Every Season’

There are players who ‘get’ Newcastle, who may not be from around these parts, but once they are here they quickly understand what it’s all about.

Kevin Keegan is perhaps the most obvious example, while ironically players from that London seem to be able to really buy into what NUFC are all about – Supermac, Rob Lee, Les Ferdinand and so on.

In the case of Peter Lovenkrands, he wasn’t the greatest player to have worn the black and white, but he became a bit of a cult hero and somebody who always spoke very well both when he was at the club and once he left.

The Danish striker understood the fans, and more importantly perhaps, knows where Newcastle’s natural place is in the greater scheme of things.

Speaking to the Chronicle, Peter Lovenkrands had this to say;

“They should be finishing top eight every season, so I really hope they can get a good start to the season.

“The club is so special and if they can get things together, they are a club that can kick on.

“There are a lot of foreign players there and the need to get bonding, get that team spirit back.

“If they can get it back to how it was 2 or 3 years ago then they have a chance.”

Like Lovenkrands, to me it is blatantly obvious that anything less than eighth should be seen as failure for Newcastle United.

The third bets supported club in the Premier League and all the other advantages of a massive fanbase should make top 8 a bare minimum.

Mike Ashley has successfully in many cases destroyed expectations/aspirations of many Newcastle supporters.

We don’t have a right to see Newcastle win things but I do believe fans have a right to see their club trying to compete and get as high up the league as possible, plus of course try and win the odd cup…match!
