Emile Heskey puts Kieron Dyer and Titus Bramble right

Emile Heskey has hit back at former Newcastle pair Kieron Dyer and Titus Bramble, after the pair made some contentious statements last week.

Talking about the proposal to introduce a version of the ‘Rooney Rule’ (a success in American Football where an obligation to interview minority candidates has led to a substantial increase in Coaches from a more diverse background), Bramble had said the idea was a ‘disgrace’, while Dyer dismissed it as saying he didn’t want to be part of ‘filling a quota’.

Emile Heskey though has spoken out;

“Kieron Dyer and Titus Bramble were saying we don’t need to have it (Rooney Rule).

“It is all right for them because they are at Ipswich, they started their careers at Ipswich and they have a rapport with Ipswich. But you have got others who probably don’t have the same rapport.

50 applications

“There’s some people who need just to be let in the door to give their views. We’re not saying you have to hire someone, we’re just saying you have to allow them to have an interview.

“I know someone who has applied for interviews, between 30 and 50, and had two. And this lad’s got every single [coaching] badge you need.”

When making their comments last week, this is what Dyer and Bramble had to say;

Kieron Dyer;

“I don’t want to be interviewed because it is filling a quota.”

While Titus Bramble said;

“The rule is a disgrace and you could say it is just as bad being given the job because of your skin colour as it is not being given the job.

“I would like to see the figures which show how many black players want to go into coaching. I can say that because I am black and I am struggling to think of a single black teammate who showed any interest in coaching. Kieron is the only one.”
