Dealing With An Unpopular Owner Bulgarian Style

While Newcastle fans have been ground down by the lack of ambition shown by Mike Ashley and apathy rules, elsewhere there is a more pro-active method used to deal with an unpopular owner.

Over in Bulgaria on Monday, the derby game between Lokomotiv Plovdiv and Botev Plovdiv was brought to a halt when home fans launched a volley of stones, flares and other missiles onto the pitch.

Play was stopped as the protests against club owner Konstantin Dinev threatened to get out of control, with one of the projectiles exploding near one of the visiting Botev players, though luckily he was unhurt.

Eventually some order was restored but it still simmered away and a few minutes before half-time the violence escalated to such an extent that the referee had to abandon the match as he he couldn’t guarantee the players’ safety.

One of the Lokomotiv players who is a fans’ favourite, Martin Kamburov, tried to talk to supporters but they were having none of it and insisted they wouldn’t allow the match to finish.

Kamburov also saying, “I don’t know where the police are and how the fans were able to bring bombs in, we tried to play but the bombs were many and dangerous. It’s a festive period and no one wants to go home with a broken head.”

The Lokomotiv owner insists he is going nowhere and said, “No one can say he loves Lokomotiv more than I do, I don’t want to bend to twenty or thirty hooligans. I hope people that love Lokomotiv will stand by me.”
