Another French Club Now Targeting Newcastle Defender

Over the Channel, L’Equipe are reporting that newly promoted RC Lens have joined Bordeaux and Marseille in expressing an interest in taking Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa back to France.

Lens reportedly see the Newcastle central defender as the ideal candidate to build their defence around and make sure a stable season follows their promotion. Mapou’s credibility is still high in France despite the way Alan Pardew has messed him around at Newcastle, with French football fans recalling how a youthful Mapou captained unglamorous Montpellier to the Ligue 1 title.

It has been widely reported that Newcastle are prepared to let the likes of Obertan, Ben Arfa, Marveaux and Ben Arfa leave, with the most likely destinations their home country.

However, yet again with the latest transfer link, it is said that Lens would be unable to match Mapou’s wages AND pay a credible transfer fee, so a loan move would be the only possible deal on the table.

The tax situation in France also means players receive less net pay than in England  after deductions, never mind the disparity between typical football wages on the two sides of the Channel.

The chances of any sizeable transfer kitty being built up from moving on these four players must be in serious doubt – where that leaves us with money for incoming transfers is anybody’s guess.
