Alan Pardew thinks ‘outstanding’ Paul Dummett could prove as good as Steven Taylor

After helping Newcastle to a clean sheet from centre-half, Paul Dummett has been compared to Steven Taylor by manager Alan Pardew.

The Newcastle boss believes that many young aspiring centre-backs need to sometimes be played first at full-back to learn the game, before moving into the more pressurised middle of the defence.

While Taylor has done well in the last few appearances, many fans will smile at Pardew comparing Dummett to a player who has enjoyed an up and down existence in the eyes of Newcastle supporters.

As for Dummett himself, while he certainly appears to have a good attitude, the jury is still out as to whether he can hack it in the Premier League and could probably do without the manager making any grand claims about his future.

Whether that is comparing him to Steven Taylor or anybody else…

Alan Pardew talking to the Shields Gazette;

“He (Paul Dummett) is an outstanding defender, he made some fantastic blocks on Wednesday, that is what he is all about.”

Like Steven Taylor;

“He is kind of Steven Taylor-ish, he’s just got a really good mentality for the game.

“Nothing fazes him, he just wants to go and play, I really, really like him. I think centre-back is his natural position if I am honest.”

Graduating from full-back;

“Young players, for example Phil Jones at Man United, sometimes need to be introduced at full-back to understand the game.

“Those tiny little nuances of centre-half play; the little nudge in the back, when to read it, when to go, all those things take time.”

Well read;

“Paul Dummett put in a performance on Wednesday that really suggests he has read all that and he knows it.”
