Alan Pardew ‘Sunderland’s average pass per goal is 2 passes before they score’

Alan Pardew has warned that the biggest threat to his team is making mistakes, due to Sunderland’s game plan relying on capitalising on mistakes.

The Newcastle manager backing this up with a statistic that when Sunderland do score, on average there has only been two passes before the ball ends up in the net.

Answering the question of why Newcastle have lost the last three derbies, Pardew claims that a lack of patience as well as mistakes have been to blame, plus United lacking the same intensity in that last 3-0 defeat.

Alan Pardew

“Because we made mistakes and they punished us, because we wasn’t patient enough, because they play very similar to our game – how they are going to play on Sunday. They are going to play deep and try to hurt us.

“I think their average pass per goal is two passes before they score, so that tells you everything about them. They capitalise on your errors and we have to make sure we don’t make errors.

“In the last game their intensity was better than ours, for whatever reason.”

The manager talking of Sunderland playing in a style very similar to Newcastle’s isn’t exactly reassuring, considering they aren’t exactly the leaders in entertainment or points.
