Alan Pardew sees new position for young Newcastle player

Alan Pardew has claimed that Paul Dummett’s best position in the future will be at centre-back.

The manager speaking after Dummett had produced a disciplined performance to help produce a clean sheet at the Etihad, whether the move was a choice or because no other option as Steven Taylor was injured (Taylor not even on bench) is unknown.

While Newcastle fans massively favour Haidara over Dummett every time we ask who should play in any particular match, the Geordie full-back (centre-back) always gives his all.

When up against a winger with pace and/or real quality, Dummett has often struggled, so maybe playing in the middle could see him able to play at a higher standard without getting exposed by pace so much. However, in the few games we have seen Dummett in the middle of the defence, there have been mixed results, with a terrible performance at Sunderland a stand out memory.

Alan Pardew was also keen to praise other young players on the night;

“We have got a good young group, I have been saying that for a while and they showed up tonight.

“I though Arma (Adam Armstrong) was terrific in that lone role, that’s his best position. He didn’t get a lot of the ball but he worked really hard. Rolando is a real threat as we know and Sammy (Ameobi) and Mehdi (Abeid) did very very well.

End up at centre-back;

“I can’t even count Dummett now, this is a player who will probably end up at centre-back and he showed tonight to our fans that this is a player who has got a great future for us going forward.”
