Alan Pardew ‘That back four didn’t look quite right’

Reflecting on his team’s performance at White Hart Lane, Alan Pardew has declared that the Newcastle back four ‘didn’t look quite right’.

Four goals conceded and not the greatest defending on any of them really, what was the cause of the dismal showing?

The Newcastle manager believes Daryl Janmaat was a big miss but this is only part of the story

Alan Pardew;

“That back four didn’t look quite right. We missed Daryl Janmaat, a massive miss for us.

“No real replacement at right-back with Santon and Ryan Taylor injured, so Dummett had to step in there, but we didn’t look quite as balanced as we normally are.

“Those little differences can affect you.”

I don’t think I have spoken to anybody who thinks playing Williamson and moving Dummett to right-back was the right way to go and the manager should hold his hands up.

Surely much better to go with just the one change, keep Dummett in the middle and put either Steven Taylor or Vurnon Anita at right-back.

Pardew however claimed that despite the scoreline this was an improved performance;

“This was not the same as Arsenal, this was a much better performance.

“The scoreline does not reflect that, but we have to accept that we have been beaten on two occasions, we have to get back to winning ways.”

Top six?

“The irony is that if we win on Sunday, we could be in the top six, and up until these two games you would have said we were one of the best sides in the league.

“We need to get back to that.”

Newcastle did have a decent run of results but as for being one of the best sides in the league?

The Newcastle boss is technically correct that United could go top six at the weekend…

What it would need would be a win over Sunderland, Tottenham not to win, Arsenal to lose AND Newcastle to turn around a 13 goal difference with the Gunners!

Not so ironically, Newcastle could also drop into the bottom half of the table at the weekend…
