West Brom v Newcastle United
Sunday 9 November 1.30pm Live On SKY Sports

The Hawthorns has been a happy hunting ground over the years for Newcastle United, only three defeats in the last thirteen visits.

When it comes to statistics though, it shows how easily they can be used in different ways, as those three wins for West Brom have come in the last five matches on the Baggies’ home soil.

Last season’s visit was really the visible beginning of Newcastle’s season falling apart. The previous two matches had seen a fortunate win over Stoke thanks to two red cards for the red and whites, followed with a battling one goal defeat to Arsenal.

However, the second day of the new year saw a desperate performance with woeful tactics from Alan Pardew. West Brom won with a single goal but fans were dismayed to see attempted long ball tactics with Shola a target man and Ben Arfa & Cisse left on the bench.

Much of the build up to today’s match has centred around Papiss Cisse, with Pardew admitting that his main striker has an ongoing problem from his serious knee injury. After admitting bringing Cisse back as a sub v Hull against expert advice, the Newcastle manager is now exercising more caution and says that they are ‘monitoring’ Cisse’s knee before deciding if he’ll start.

Siem De Jong, Davide Santon, Gabriel Obertan and Cheick Tiote are already definitely ruled out, while like Cisse, Rolando Aarons is also rated as ‘doubtful’ after picking up a knock.

I can’t seen even Pardew starting with two players who aren’t 100% but I do expect Papiss Cisse to play, with Aarons on the bench. While Perez has done well with two poacher goals against Liverpool and Spurs, playing the main striking role has looked a bit beyond him at the minute, with little influence on the general play.

Other possibilities look even less likely, Gouffran has been terrible on the wing for almost a year, so taking a chance on him as main striker would be a major leap of faith. While Riviere didn’t even make the eighteen against Liverpool, despite seemingly being fit. Adam Armstrong seemingly behind Ayoze Perez in the pecking order at the minute.

Barrinng unknown injuries, most of the rest of the team appears to pick itself. The back five look sure to keep their places, along with Colback, SIssoko and Abeid who has been impressive in the last two games.

Assuming Cisse is selected then that leaves two places. I fancy Remy Cabella and Sammy Ameobi could get the nod but have a nagging outside bet feeling that Pardew could just find a place for Ryan Taylor in his midfield as a surprise pick.

I predict a Newcastle starting 11 v West Brom along the following lines;

Krul, Janmaat, Coloccini, Steven Taylor, Dummett, Colback, Abeid, Sissoko, Sammy Ameobi, Cabella, Cisse

Match Betting: NUFC to win 12/5 NUFC to score in both halves 16/5Mehdi Abeid to score a goal any time 15/2
