Manchester City v Newcastle United – League Cup Fourth Round
Wednesday 29 October 7.45pm Live On SKY Sports

Monday night’s reserve match possibly told us a lot about the Newcastle starting 11 against Man City.

Monday night saw the Newcastle United reserves (Under 21s) perform a perfect late collapse, throwing away the lead that Adam Campbell had given the visitors, allowing Middlesbrough to score two late goals and go top of the Under 21s table at the expense of United.

However, what the team selection more importantly told us was who is likely to be involved in Wednesday night’s clash with Manchester City in the League Cup.

In the starting line-up against Middlesbrough were Adam Campbell, Haris Vuckic, Gael Bigirimana, and Lubo Satka, the only four I could see who would/could have had any involvement at the Etihad.

Campbell is just back from injury, while I suppose there is a small chance Vuckic could make the bench against City despite playing for over an hour last night.

Alan Pardew isn’t doing a press conference before this match so we will have to do without his words of wisdom this time…

This leaves Newcastle with the following possibilities;

Recent first teamers – Krul, Coloccini, Sissoko, Anita, Gouffran, Colback, Perez, Haidara, Cabella, Janmaat, Obertan, Steven Taylor, Sammy Ameobi, Dummett

Fringe – Ryan Taylor, Ferreyra, Elliot, Abeid, Armstrong

Injured – Santon, Aarons, Williamson, Cisse, De Jong, Tiote, Riviere

Those five players in the ‘fringe’ group look almost certain to be involved having been left out of the reserves match with Boro last night.

Armstrong, Abeid and Elliot all started in the last round at Palace and look very likely to do the same tomorrow – given Cisse and Riviere look to be out for this week’s games, there’s already talk of resting Perez to make sure he is alright for Saturday! This a player who was one for the future…

Hard to see how Pardew could play Ryan Taylor from the start against opposition like City but it looks nailed on that he will make an appearance at some time. While with the elusive Facundo Ferreyra it is anybody’s guess when, if ever, we will see him!

Unless some of the injured suddenly come back in, I can see Pardew making some big changes in order to target Liverpool on Saturday.

Players such as Janmaat, Coloccini, Colback and Sissoko could be taken out of the firing line with maybe Anita at right-back, Dummett partnering Taylor in the middle and Haidara at left-back, with Abeid in for Sissoko, Cabella for Colback.

Leaving a team selection along the lines of;

Elliot, Anita, Steven Taylor, Dummett, Haidara, Cabella, Abeid, Obertan, Gouffran, Sammy Ameobi, Armstrong

We live in hope but it could get messy…
