Pardew Meets Ashley To Discuss Possible Signing

Alan Pardew met Mike Ashley to discuss a possible signing after Newcastle progressed through to the group stages of the Europa League.

Sitting in the Leazes End you could see the pain on Ryan Taylor’s face as he appeared to fall awkwardly in the eleventh minute, Alan Pardew reflecting post-match that, “It doesn’t look good”.

Speaking about meeting up with Mike Ashley, the manager revealed, “Ryan Taylor’s injury will have to make me think whether we need another defender in and I’m hoping that isn’t the case and we have a good enough squad. The squad’s got depth and we will need it”.

With James Perch also going off last night with which hopefully will prove to be a minor knock, it just goes to show how extra matches can impact on the squad/season.

I don’t think it needs pointing out how bad it would be for the squad it would have been if any two of Coiloccini, Ba and Cisse had suffered injuries as bad as Ryan Taylor’s appears to be.

We can’t, and don’t, expect Manchester City/Chelsea size squads but after Alan Pardew’s very public chase for extra defenders in the transfer window, I struggle to think of how the manager can now think we have enough strength in depth in the squad….and that was before injuries to Ryan Taylor and possibly Perch.

The strength in depth argument is of course a completely different one again to have we got enough quality at the back, at the top end.
