Newcastle Statistics Throw Up Big Surprise

It is always interesting after a match, in the cold light of day, to see if the statistics match up to what we saw with our own eyes.

What came out of of the Spurs match according to BBC Statistics is the following;

Possession                    NUFC 60%     Spurs 40%

Total Shots                   NUFC 6          Spurs 12

Shots On Target           NUFC  4        Spurs 6

Corners                          NUFC 3          Spurs 5

Goals                              NUFC 2            Spurs 1

The big stand out for me (apart from scoring more goals!) is how much Newcastle dominated possession.

Walking out of the ground I felt that Spurs deserved something and maybe on chances they might have a case but great news to see the amount of time Newcastle controlled the ball.

Alan Pardew deserves a lot of credit for his half-time chat because we definitely picked up in that second period.

It was two bits of magic though that won the match and bare statistics can’t do justice to Ba’s strike or Ben Arfa’s ambitious run into the box.

    Im pretty sure those possesion stats are wrong. From other sources such as sky, papers etc it is alot closer on paper. I may be wrong but that doesnt seem accurate.

    I’ve often noticed a difference between the statistics from different sources. Even with supposedly set in stone facts such as corners you sometimes get a difference between BBC and Sky. Even allowing for a slight degree of variance though, the possession statistics still make pleasant reading.
