Newcastle End Virgin Sponsorship Deal Early

Newcastle United have made the shock announcement today that their sponsorship with Virgin Money will end after the last match of the 2012/13 season.

The deal, which was signed in January 2012, was due to run until the end of the 2013/14 season.

The Club have said they expect to announce ‘an exciting new sponsorship deal’ in the coming weeks which will commence after the last match at the end of this season.

Whilst Virgin Money will remain as Club sponsor until the end of the current season, Newcastle United have chosen to exercise its contractual right, as both parties had the option to do, to end the two-year sponsorship deal with the bank at the end of this season.

Derek Llambias;

“We have enjoyed a very successful partnership with Virgin Money which we thank them for. However we have decided to end the agreement early and we will be announcing a new sponsorship partner shortly which represents an excellent commercial deal for both parties.”

Very surprising news that the deal has ended which was reported to be worth £10m a season, could there be a new deal in the offing including renaming the ground….?

    Oh bollocks. Please don’t let it be Sports Direct. I was watching an old DVD (4-3 vs Man United) at the weekend and I miss the ground without that hideous logo all over it. I even miss the old font that Newcastle United used to be laid out in across the East Stand roof.

    Really can’t see nufc throwing away £10 -£20 million from Virgin for more free advertising for Sports Direct (call me naive). Obviously a new and more lucrative sponsor is lined up – worryingly I can only see this being tied to a stadium sponsor. Why else cancel excellent deal with Virgin Money?
