I don’t think for one moment Yohan Cabaye would have given up Champions League football if he didn’t think Newcastle United were capable of fulfilling his ambitions.
The French midfielder would have certainly had no trouble finding another club to also give him Champions League football and at the very least match the wages he is getting at St.James’ Park.
So why Newcastle?
Cabaye has frequently stated that the prospect of playing in front of fifty thousand passionate fans was a massive factor but clearly he is an ambitious player with regard to both club and country.
Naturally we all have to live in the real world in terms of finances but the only way Newcastle can continue to grow is by keeping their best players.
In an interview in The Sun, Yohan makes it clear what he sees as the way forward;
“Demba scored many goals for us so it’s going to be important to keep him — and keep all the big players.
I hope the board are going to do the right things to keep them.
I don’t know if we can go higher than last season, but we have to keep doing the right thing”.
I’ve got no doubt Yohan Cabaye is totally committed to Newcastle United and will be here for years to come BUT that will depend 100% on the playmaker believing that the club shares his ambitions.
Players come and go from every club but it would be a crying shame if having got into such a strong position with this group of players, that by selling one player we end up with a domino effect.
