I am currently working in Bilbao and loving every minute of it. Should we draw Athletic, I would encourage everyone to make this trip. They Love us over here. the number of people I have had buying me drinks and regaling me with amazing tales of the supporters of NUFC. Including one lad, who told me there were over twenty Mags with him at PARMA! The round after Athletic beat us on aggregate.
I was walking down the road the other day (in my Toon top) soaking up the gorgeous sunshine and continuing my quest of trying to have a pint in every single one of its 7000 bars (yes Seven Thousand!), when I heard a couple of lads singing at the top of their voice. It could only have been meant for me and it quickly got my attention. ‘Walking in a Keegan Wonderland!!’. I looked around and they were waving and shouting over to me…. ‘Toon Army Toon Army’!!! truly smashing, lovely people, as proud of their Basque nation as we are proud to be Geordies and as mad as a box of frogs…..
The supporters here have said that after visiting Newcastle (It has taken on legendary status here, stories brought back by their fathers and elders), was a wake up call for them as to how brilliant opposing fans can be and this has encouraged them to try and be the best or as one lad put it, ‘to be more perfect hosts than Newcastle United’.
To say that Bilbao is friendly would be like saying that Cattermole is a poor footballer and that S(cum)erland are not really very good. In short, an understatement of the highest order.
Bilbao. Miss it at your peril, or regret it for the rest of your days.
Now where’s that Europa league draw made and how do you tamper with those balls….?
This article was written by ‘Lynxie’ in response to an excellent one written by Robbie Murray reminiscing about the Newcastle visit to Bilbao in 1994.
