The second week in January saw both Paul Dummett and Jonjo Shelvey visit Barcelona.

The pair of travelled with Newcastle United physio Sean Beech to see a Spanish specialist to try and get to the bottom of their respective injuries.

Paul Dummett was on the sidelines for the ninth time in these past five and a half years due to hamstring problems.

Whilst Jonjo Shelvey had travelled there in December to see the same specialist for treatment and advice on a thigh injury and was being forced to go back as it was still causing him problems.

By the time the next match comes around, Huddersfield at home on Saturday 23 February, it will have been over seven weeks since (2 January 2019) Paul Dummett had started a game, whilst for Jonjo Shelvey it will be 16 weeks (3 November 2018) since he was named in Rafa’s starting 11.

However, there may be a more positive outlook for both players now.

Paul Dummett is expected to get 45 minutes when Newcastle play a friendly on Saturday against CSKA Moscow.

The player telling NUFC TV:

“Very frustrating because as a football player, you want to be playing matches and being on the sidelines watching the players train and not being able to do it is so frustrating, especially a few times this season with the same injury.

“I’m hoping to do everything I can to try to put it behind me and stay fit as long as I can.

“I am training with the team and feeling really good. I need to build my fitness up and I hope to get some minutes at the weekend.”

As for Jonjo Shelvey, he is behind Dummett in his recovery and won’t feature on Saturday, but is making progress.

A report from the club’s training camp in Spain on the club’s official site saying:

‘The second day of Newcastle United’s Spanish training camp saw Jonjo Shelvey step up his return from a thigh injury.

‘Midfield ace Shelvey joined in with some of Wednesday morning’s session and it is hoped he will continue to edge nearer to a return to action over the next few days – although he won’t be involved in Saturday’s friendly against CSKA Moscow.’
