Overwhelming results after we asked fans ‘Why do you still go and watch Newcastle United?’

The question we asked on Tuesday, was ‘Why do you still go and watch Newcastle United?’

Every fan is different.

A bit like picking the team, everybody has their own personal reasons and views on why they think or do whatever.

So why are you still going to watch Newcastle United?

Obviously, we know that thousands of you have stopped going but that is a question for another day maybe, plus we all know what the overwhelming answer would be.

So for the tens of thousands still going every home match, or even regularly/irregularly on a game by game basis to home and/or away matches, why exactly are you still doing it?

We gave ten options and gave Newcastle United fans the choice of ticking any number of them from one up to all ten.

Thanks to everybody who responded and these are the results, those who indicated each reason as a proportion/percentage of the total number of fans who took part:

81% Loyalty to the club

61% Whilst Rafa still here there’s hope

56% Social – Meet up with friends and/or family on matchday

45% Habit

28% Loyalty/support for this current squad of players

11% To be entertained

7% To watch good football

4% There’s nothing else to do in Newcastle

3% To see trophies being won

2% Believe Mike Ashley is building a successful club

I think we could all have guessed what the general feeling would be but a massive theme came through.

Four in five fans saying loyalty to the club was a reason why they were still turning up.

Three in five saying whilst Rafa was still there it gave them hope of better times ahead.

Whilst almost three in five also said it was meeting up with family and friends on matchday, the location of St James Park slap bang in the city centre with hundreds of bars and restaurants to meet up in, before and after matches, as well as socialising inside St James Park.

The least popular four choices (ignoring that Talksport Moose inspired ‘nothing else to do in Newcastle’ one), sees only the lunatic fringe/trolls going with Mike Ashley building a successful club and/or any expectation of trophies. Whilst watching good football and expecting to be entertained had predictably minimal support.

I think fair to say the results would be very different if asking the likes of Chelsea and Man Utd fans, amongst others.
