Newcastle 2 Manchester City 1  – Tuesday 29 January 8pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle beating the champions in an extraordinary game, despite falling behind after only 24 seconds.

What a night.

Jamie Smith:

“I did think winning tonight would be pretty much the most Newcastle United thing to do, although I doubted myself a bit after 24 seconds.

“A really strong performance that just goes to show this team has been below its potential in spite of the under investment, the foul atmosphere etc.

“Longstaff excelled against stellar opposition, Rondón showed what a difference he makes leading the line and Dubravka, Atsu, Ritchie all played their part in a win that gave some much needed cheer.

“Maybe this, added to the likely Almiron signing, can reignite a bit of hope for the short term at least.

“Don’t get too carried away though. This club urgently needs a change of ownership to really breathe again.”

Ben Cooper:

“Awesome.”

Kevin Christie:

“It doesn’t get much more ‘Newcastle’ than that!

“Fantastic performance – particularly in defence.

“Rondón was immense again as well. Signing him permanently ASAP is an absolute must.

“Feared the worst with the early goal and expected an implosion and all hell to break loose in the stands but it didn’t play out that way!

“No sign of any protest or sit-in at the final whistle – understandably so, given the circumstances!

“Getting Almirón in would be an unexpected bonus but will believe it when I see it.

“Fair play to Rafa and all the players for a determined and committed display – game plan executed to a tee despite the setback of the Agüero goal.

“A fantastic night – one to savour and a sign of what could be achieved with a little backing and belief from those upstairs!”

George Stainsby:

“You can say Manchester City weren’t very good tonight.

“But for us to come back from going a goal down, with a solid, unified team performance, was very positive.

“How good could it be?

“This might be the three points we never expected that keeps us up.

“I’m just off to discover the secret of alchemy.”

Toon Bano:

“So, we go from Rafa possibly walking out.

“To a possible £20m new signing on his way.

“With two other players possibly coming in to boost the squad.

“To going behind within 30 seconds to Man City and thinking the worst.

“To beating Man City for the first time since god knows when.

“Mental.

“A day in the life of a Geordie.”

Paul Patterson:

“Never in doubt that result…

“Cracking effort from Rafa and the lads.”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“Can’t quite believe that.

“Can barely speak.

“How has that happened.

“The defence were outstanding to a man. Schaar in particular, immense.

“It’s a night words can’t really do justice.

“All I will end with is, Newcastle United will never be defeated.”

Nat Seaton:

“Waited a long time for a feeling like this.

“Never let their heads drop from the early goal and ended up coming from behind to beat the Champions.

“Absolutely brilliant!!!!!”

Davey Hat-Trick:

“Not sure I can believe what I witnessed.

“Just at the point you feel like walking away forever, Newcastle come up with a performance like that.

“My head went down when they scored after 23 seconds, but the team’s didn’t.

“It was more about discipline and determination than skill and ambition, but we just kept going until we achieved the most unlikely of victories.

“Everyone played their part, of course, but Rondón  was exceptional.

“A nod to Atsu also, who epitomised the fighting spirit, and Longstaff wasn’t fazed at all.”
