Newcastle 0 Watford 2  – Saturday 26 January 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle deservedly losing in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The dream is over for another year…

Jamie Smith:

“Another sh..house performance against a shadow side that sums up the black cloud over the place.

“Maybe, just maybe a bit of a run in the cup might have given a chunk of light, a hint of hope amongst the desolation, but we lose to Watford reserves in the same way we did in the last relegation season.

“Once more round 5 evades us and no one can do owt about the malaise at the place because we’re all too busy bickering at each other, no doubt the comments section of this will give you a typical insight of more misdirected anger.

“Getting shi..er.

“Concentrate on stopping up and hoping against all evidence that another season can buy our way out of this mess if Fatbags McGee troughs enough money he feels he’s had his share.

“What a way to exist.”

Jonathan Drape-Comyn:

“Is anyone surprised?

“Sad thing is, there is no way that we were going to win this game today.

“Just as well Rafa rested those players so we could go on and batter Manchester City during the week.

“Interesting stat on the radio earlier, that every time Newcastle have beaten Watford in the cup they have gone on to the cup final… and every time they have lost to Watford in the cup they have been relegated.

“Rafa should resign.

“Fans should stop going.

“Stop giving money to Mike Ashley.”

Ben Cooper:

“Pretty dreadful that.

“Plenty of effort but nowt going forward.

“The first goal on the hour was enough, they didn’t need the tap-in at the end.

“We created nothing in that game,

“Manquillo’s Schar-esque run our only shot on target I think.

“It was a waste of an afternoon all in all.”

David Punton:

“Miserable result. Miserable performance. Miserable week. Miserable fans. Miserable club.

“Yes, it was another FA Cup special at St James Park today.

“Players and manager must share some of the culpability, but it’s the Mike Ashley regime that has left our club well short of quality.

“Now it’s 12 seasons without progress beyond the fourth round. What an abysmal record.

“It’s a sad state of affairs that staying in the cup is seen as a bit of a chore.

“Can the people running Newcastle Utd get anything right? All we seem to get are lies, let downs and negligence.

“There’s a real sense that our football club is in a compete and utter mess.

“Today’s capitulation evidences that.”

Toon Bano:

“Groundhog day.

“Hope the fans that filled the stadium to a decent extent enjoyed their day out.

“They must enjoy our hopeless case as they won’t begin to try and change it.”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“FA Cup groundhog day.

“I can’t believe it was such a meek, embarrassing performance, when really our entire season should be geared towards this great competition.

“Sadly it never will be under MA.

“I feel for Benitez today as his options were limited, and the players out there did him no favours whatsoever.

“Awful.

“At least we can concentrate on our annual relegation battle instead.”

Paul Patterson:

“1 shot on target means you can’t win the game when you concede two.

“The club got what it wanted and that was an exit from the cup.

“Watford have spent money and could afford to rotate, we can’t.

“Let’s focus on the boring task of finishing 17th in the league.

“Aren’t we lucky as supporters? Thanks Mike!”

Nat Seaton:

“Five shots says it all, never mind there being only 1 on target. A terrible game of football.

“I was sitting there in the rain, wishing I wasn’t there, I would never have thought I would ever feel like that.

“Cup matches have become a joke at NUFC and I have to question why I bother going…”
