After 9 spells out with same injury Newcastle United star travels with Jonjo Shelvey to see specialist in Barcelona

On Monday it was reported that Jonjo Shelvey was returning to Barcelona to see a specialist.

The Newcastle midfielder having travelled there in December for treatment and advice on a thigh injury and forced to go back as it is still causing him problems, with Shelvey not having started a game in the 10 weeks since he was forced off against Watford.

Tuesday has brought a further update/exclusive from The Mail, who have revealed that Paul Dummett has joined Jonjo Shelvey in Barcelona.

The newspaper says that NUFC physio Sean Beech has accompanied the players to see a Spanish specialist to try to get to the bottom of their respective injuries.

Paul Dummett has already spent two spells out this season with hamstring problems but it is even more of a concern when you look at just how long, and how regularly, he has had hamstring issues hampering his career.

As the figures show below, Paul Dummett has been on the sidelines 10 times through injury in these past five and a half years, with nine of the ten due to hamstring problems.

The Mail report does though add that Rafa Benitez still hopes to have one or both players in his squad on Saturday at Chelsea.

Obviously the worry is though, that if there is no definitive solution found to the injuries, then Shelvey and/or Dummett could end up injured for a long spell yet again if playing in the Premier League.

Interesting to look back on Paul Dummett’s NUFC career and you find that only twice has he managed to start more than half the games in any Premier League season, even then it was only 24 in 2014/15 and 23 in 2015/16.
