Alan Shearer gives his verdict on Mike Ashley claiming he is selling Newcastle United

Alan Shearer knew didn’t have to think twice when asked whether he believes Mike Ashley is going to sell Newcastle United.

The NUFC legend declaring ‘We have been there before and heard it all before’.

It is over 10 years now since Mike Ashley first promised fans that he was definitely selling the club, so only when they see it actually happen will Alan Shearer and the rest of the Newcastle fanbase believe the owner is genuine.

Just like the rest of us, Alan Shearer is sceptical as to the exactly why Ashley decided to make his claims on Sky News on Monday: ‘It seems that these rumours always resurface around the January transfer window and it’s a bit like Groundhog Day to be honest.’

The former NUFC number nine hopes that there is ‘substance’ this time but clearly isn’t expecting anything to happen any time soon.

In better news, Shearer is relieved that a ‘tricky start to the season’ when Newcastle picked up only two points in nine matches, has been followed by 11 points from the last six games.

That six match run of three wins, two draws and just the one defeat has meant the Magpies have only four clubs with better records when it comes to the Premier League form table ove the course of the last half dozen matches.

Alan Shearer talking to Coral:

“I can’t get excited at all about the potential takeover at Newcastle.

“We have been there before and heard it all before.

“It seems that these rumours always resurface around the January transfer window and it’s a bit like Groundhog Day to be honest.

“That said, it is definitely much needed so I hope that this time there does end up being more substance behind the rumours.

“On the pitch, they have been putting together some much better results after a tricky start to the season.

“They came unstuck against West Ham but they bounced back with a good point at Everton, so overall there has been much more promise and that’s been great to see.”
