Aleksandar Mitrovic one of five named by Serbia from Premier League

Aleksandar Mitrovic looks to be the only possible Newcastle United player who will play any part in the World Cup finals this summer.

Matz Sels has been named in Belgium’s preliminary 28 man squad but is set to be third choice keeper at best.

However, the striker could well be snapped up by another club before they even kick off in three weeks time, if the rumours are to be believed.

If Fulham beat Aston Villa then it is reported that they will move quickly to try and make the deal permanent ahead of any rivals.

Ahead of that though, on Thursday afternoon Mladen Krstajic has named a 27 man preliminary squad for this summer’s tournament in Russia.

It includes five players on the books of Premier League clubs, including Aleksandar Mitrovic, with the squad having to be cut to 23 by 4 June at the latest.

Serbia last qualified for the World Cup in 2010 and after hopefully beating Villa, Aleksandar Mitrovic will move straight on to prepare for pre-tournament friendlies against Chile on 4 June and Bolivia the 9 June.

They are in World Cup Group E and play Costa Rica on 17 June, Switzerland on 22 June, Brazil on  27 June.

Serbia’s preliminary 27 man squad:

Goalkeepers:

Vladimir Stojkovic (Partizan Belgrade), Predrag Rajkovic (Maccabi Tel Aviv), Marko Dmitrovic (Eibar), Aleksandar Jovanovic (Aarhus).

Defenders:

Aleksandar Kolarov (AS Roma), Branislav Ivanovic (Zenit St. Petersburg), Dusko Tosic (Guangzhou R&F), Antonio Rukavina (Villarreal), Milos Veljkovic (Werder Bremen), Milan Rodic (Red Star Belgrade), Uros Spajic (Krasnodar), Matija Nastasic (Schalke 04), Nikola Milenkovic (Fiorentina).
