Astonishing stats showing percentage of Newcastle fans too young to have known club winning trophy

How many Newcastle fans are too young to have known their team winning the league?

For that matter, what about the FA Cup and Fairs Cup?

Some quality digging on the stats, by a specialist, have thrown up some very interesting data for Newcastle United and other clubs.

Writing for The Times, Bill Edgar specialises in stats based articles and these latest figures are cracking…and blow your mind a bit.

He looked at a number of clubs who hadn’t won the league (Premier League/First Division as was) for a while, a long time, and a very very long time.

Edgar then estimated the proportion of current fans of each of these clubs who are too young to have known when their team won the league the last time.

The Times writer using the assumption that fans start following their team at the age of five years old – then used Office for National Statistics population figures.

Estimated proportion of fans too young to have known team win league:

Arsenal 23% (last won 2004)

Liverpool 40% (1990)

Everton 45% (1987)

Spurs 78% (1961)

Newcastle United 99.9% (1927)

As usual, no doubt the Arsenal fans will be demanding that they are suffering the most!

On a more serious note, it is a sobering thought that approximately only around one in a thousand Newcastle fans will be old enough to recall Hughie Gallacher leading Newcastle to glory in 1926/27.

To have been around then (assuming five or older), you would now be 96 or older to fit that criteria.

Whilst Bill Edgar only covered the five clubs and the league title, using rough figures based on the progression in the stats above, I make it that the following would then apply to Newcastle United and the FA Cup & Fairs Cup:

70% too young to have known when Newcastle United won the Fairs Cup in 1969.

84% too young to have known when Newcastle United last won the FA Cup in 1955.

I went with the cautious side on these estimates and I’m guessing that the actual figures would be more than the 70% and 84% I have guesstimated at.

However, even using these figures above, only around one in seven Newcastle fans will be able to recall the 1955 FA Cup final win and only three in ten the European victory.

For the 1955 FA Cup you would need to be at least 68 now and as for the Fairs Cup, 54.

I dread to think how many more years will now go by before any trophy comes along.

Will any of us be still here when that happens?!!

By the time we next take on the FA Cup in 2019, it will already be 13 (thirteen!) years since we even reached the fifth round (in 2006), so based on the Arsenal 23% stat for 2004, I reckon around 20% of Newcastle fans are even too young to have known the FA Cup fifth round…
