Shola Ameobi scores again and means he has remarkable 18 year goalscoring record

Shola Ameobi was back on the goals trail yesterday.

The former Newcastle striker scoring his fifth league goal of the season but his first in over two months.

The goal finished off Stevenage and completed a 2-0 win for a Notts County team managed by Kevin Nolan.

The result means Notts County are now just one point off the automatic promotion places and eight points clear of those outside the League Two play-off places.

Never the most prolific, Shola Ameobi is making up for it with longevity.

He will turn 37 later this year but it remains to be seen if he will continue beyond this present campaign.

Yesterday’s goal has also thrown up an interesting stat, as these are the calendar years in which Shola Ameobi has scored a goal in first team football:

2001

2002

2003

2004

2005

2006

2008

2009

2010

2011

2012

2013

2014

2015

2016

2017

2018

As the sharper eyed will have noticed, the former NUFC forward has now scored in 17 of the last 18 calendar years, including the current one.

The odd one out is 2007 and Shola Ameobi missed much of that through injury.

Shola had needed a hip injury for two years but postponed it to help Newcastle qualify for the Intertoto Cup and then subsequent UEFA Cup qualification. A decision that helped Newcastle United in the short-term but probably did no favours to the player’s longer-term career.
