Stoke 0 Newcastle 1 – Monday 1 January 2018 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Consecutive away wins for Newcastle United!

Jamie Swan:

“You beauty. Deserved three points against a scabby team and a manager that I wouldn’t tire of slapping across the mush with a wet kipper.

“How’s that then Hughesy? Stick that in your pottered pipe and smoke it. You’ll need a new hobby when you are on the dole tomorrow.

“By the way, can we play away every week? Great performance.

“Murphy is growing in confidence and was great. But I’ll be honest, I think everyone was at least an 8 out of ten today (yes even Diame).

“Big Karl Darlow pulled off some moves with arms and legs like Inspector Gadget to stop a couple of certain (massively undeserved) goals. Hats off to you son.

“Lascelles and Clark are definitely our best CB pairing and look rock solid, shame Clarky missed an open goal from one yard out! How did he miss?

“Luckily it didn’t bite us on the bum and we can win without referees giving us penalties! Just as well like.

“This is 100% something to build on.

“This is 100% the way we need to play. Well done lads, well done Rafa. Triumph in mother chuffing adversity.

“ASHLEY out.”

Ben Cooper:

“Great win that.

“Another defensively sound, hard-working performance by a team that seems much more comfortable playing away from SJP.

“For the first 80 minutes we kept their better players quiet and attacked with purpose and intent which meant we created chances.

“Unlike the Brighton game, all of our attacking players contributed something, Perez and Murphy probably had their best games of the season, Atsu was always a threat despite missing some good chances and the others all made a contribution, even if they were not consistently in the game.

“In midfield Diame continued his gradual upward curve alongside an industrious Shelvey and the pair always had the upper hand in the centre.

“At the back, Clark and Lascelles were magnificent defensively, if not in front of goal, and the full backs worked hard and defended tirelessly.

“We limited Stoke to long range shots until the last 10 minutes, when they lumped it up to C3PO and Darlow made a couple of worldies.

“They should have scored near the end, no doubt Mark Hughes will whinge about that as he searches for the nearest dole office.

“He probably won’t say that the best team won today, so I will say it for him. The best team won today.”

Toon Bano:

“Get in there you beauty!!!!

“That was a game we had to win after the Brighton debacle.

“Fair play to Murphy, he was shocking first half but stepped up when needed.

“Perez continues to prove to be a key player for us when he is used. He is inconsistent but we don’t have massive options up top.

“Finally, a day of results that go our way.

“Happy New Year!!!!”

Jamie Smith:

“Tremendous result that puts a different perspective on recent weeks, although the chances to bury it seemed to have gone (Clark’s miss – aargh)

“If this is an omen for 2018 hopefully it’s gonna be a good one, some critical breathing space between us and the bottom ahead of a crucial home game with Swansea (looking for a third double of the season – crackers).

“Hopefully by then we’ll have some essential new faces….”

Nat Seaton:

“What a win!!!!

“Started 2018 with a MASSIVE 3 points.

“Going home feeling great (even though still a bit concerned about having only 22 points!!).

“Happy New Year…”

George Stainsby:

“Hope. It’s what football season’s are built on, and what this result gives us.

“Mike Ashley, look at the numbers; buy some players, get loads of TV money.”

Paul Lyon:

“What a result! Much needed!

“Seems we’re a better prospect away from home at the moment.

“Pleased for Rafa and the lads, delighted for the away end today!”

David Punton:

“It’s been a tough time for Rafa Benitez lately, so I’m pleased for him.

“He got a lot of stick for the Man City and Brighton displays but he’s kept going and he got it right today.

“That the goal came from Ayoze Perez is even better, as it’s high time he notched and justified his inclusion in the team instead of Gayle.

“Plaudits also to Karl Darlow for a brilliant point blank save to preserve the slender lead we’d taken.

“The stats show this was a game we deserved to win and the denial of a penalty kick was tough to take.

“Thankfully we have gone on and scored a nice goal on the break. Jacob Murphy showing good pace, before centring for Perez to stab the ball home.

“Happy new year!”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“Incredible win.

“Startlingly good performance after what happened on Saturday.

“Perez finished like a poacher and has deserved to be the match winner after his effort in recent games.

“Need the belief to keep growing now ahead of bigger tests to come.”

Paul Patterson:

“The points are all that matters.

“Here’s to the takeover.

“Here’s to the future.

“Here’s to Newcastle fans everywhere.

“Happy new year.”
