Why inconsistency should be welcomed at Newcastle United this season

Despite its uncertainties, inconsistency is to be welcomed at St James Park this season.

Unlike previous efforts by Newcastle United in the top division, it at least prevents consistently poor and tawdry results.

Unpredictable displays are the hallmark of mid-table mediocrity and, although far from the long-term aspirations of any hopeful fan, it is better than most pundits or supporters expected from the players in August.

One draw, three victories and an equal number of defeats so far this season, certainly indicates a pattern of contradictions.

With the exception of our slightly superior home form, peaks and troughs appear randomly assorted across recent fixtures.

It defies logic that the same team who won three consecutive matches could look as bewildered in front of goal as they did against Brighton. And yet, that’s exactly what happened.

Unfortunately, rubbish performances can happen with a squad of such middle-ranking players…but then those same journeymen can surprise their critics with resolute defensive grit, pin-sharp and flukey finishes off the shin.

There’s nothing especially radical about that fact but it is worth bearing in mind, whenever a new peak or trough is reached across the year.

It is that knowledge which hopefully stops us becoming too excited or disturbed by a single result, saving us from foolish knee-jerk reactions on internet messageboards and around the office.

A finish of 13th or above would still be a good, albeit not exactly dazzling, league standing.

Any newly promoted club would be happy with the same, no matter what pitchside ups and downs ensued in the process of getting to that point.
