Brighton 1 Newcastle 0 – Match ratings of all United players

Brighton 1 Newcastle 0 Sunday 24 September 4pm

Elliott 7 – Didn’t do anything wrong, made a few good saves, albeit expected, in the first half. Couldn’t be blamed for the goal. I’ll leave that to someone else.

Yedlin 7 – Thought he did well both defensively and going forward. Just wasn’t enough on the day but I think he did ok!

Lascelles 4 – Fine margins in football matches like today. Lascelles was totally at fault for the goal, giving away a needless foul in a stupid area of the pitch. Lots of people been raving about him recently, especially in the media, but I’m yet to be impressed by him as a centre-half.

Clark 6 – Another one who did ok again but it was a game of fine margins and Lascelles’ poor decision was what ultimately cost us. Not a bad defensive performance on the whole.

Mbemba 6 – Doing his best at left-back and looks fine defensively but can’t offer us an awful lot going forward. Especially since he refuses to use his left foot under any circumstances.

Merino 8 – Best player on the pitch in a Newcastle shirt. Looks comfortable on the ball and also puts himself about! Already the first name on the team sheet in the centre of the park.

Hayden 5 – As poor as I’ve seen him play since he joined. Didn’t impose himself on the game at all. Wouldn’t surprise me if Rafa gave Shelvey the nod ahead of him for the Liverpool game. Needs to offer something else at the top level.

Ritchie 7 – His usual industrious self. Always looking to get on the ball and try and create something. Can’t say much wrong about his performance today.

Perez 3 – Awful. Not sure how he gets 90 minutes. Doesn’t even look like he is bothered half the time. Not a fan.

Atsu 6 – One of those players that you don’t know what you’re going to get from him each week. Had a promising start to the game but failed to find a decent end product.

Joselu 5 – Missed an absolute golden opportunity in the first half and has to be dropped for Gayle against Liverpool. A shame though that he didn’t get any service into the box in the form of crosses from out wide.

Gayle 6 – Wasn’t on long enough to have enough of an impact. Must start against Liverpool.

Shelvey 6 – Another one who needs to play next week, big performance needed from him.

Gamez – Not on long enough. Says a lot about what Rafa thinks of the likes of Murphy and Diame that neither can get on the pitch in a time of need.

A game of fine margins.

Newcastle did well.

You win some you lose some.
