Mark Lawrenson has been looking at Huddersfield v Newcastle match at the weekend.

The two clubs had very contrasting fortunes at the weekend, with Huddersfield winning 3-0 at Crystal Palace and Newcastle going down 2-0 at home to Tottenham.

Lawrenson actually had praise for both managers after the opening weekend, saying David Wagner had done well to play down the victory at Palace and that Rafa’s team ‘were doing all right’ against last season’s runners-up – until Jonjo Shelvey doomed NUFC with his red card.

Newcastle will miss Shelvey and the injured Lejeune & Dummett on Sunday but Mark Lawrenson thinks that won’t stop United getting on the scoreboard.

He has predicted a 1-1 draw with Rafa looking to make sure his team don’t lose this one and go six points behind Huddersfield, whilst he believes David Wagner will be mor ethan happy with four points out of six in the first two games.

Mark Lawrenson talking to BBC Sport:

“I loved the comments of Huddersfield manager David Wagner after his side’s win over Crystal Palace, which were along the lines of, ‘we have made a really good start but we are not kidding ourselves’.

“I thought that was the perfect way to approach it because he knows there is a lot more hard work to go.

“Newcastle were doing all right against Tottenham until Jonjo Shelvey got himself sent off and that was the end of that.

“Magpies boss Rafael Benitez will not want to start the season having played two, lost two, so I think they will be keeping things pretty tight.

“A draw would not be a disaster for Huddersfield, though. That would leave them on four points, and they would only need another 36 to stay up.

“Mark Lawrenson prediction: 1-1.”

AWAY WIN! Come on, its Huddersfield, we will roll them over like a Greggs sausage.

    • Jezza

Huddersfield are not to be underestimated as Crystal Palace found out last week.

So looking forward to merino playing. I know he only had 15 minutes but you could tell he looked confident with the ball at his feet and was always looking to attack. Pretty sure this guys going to be a big star for us. Got to be a toon win!!!

If you have a look at the first choice team (and bench) against Spurs it
may not have too many star names in it but I don’t think it’s as bad as it
is being made out to be.

Up until Shlevey’s madness we matched Spurs,
limited their chances and created a few of our own…all that while
shuffling the defence around twice. We may not have an open out and out
attack that will score loads of goals but I do think Rafa has them very
well organised. Having said that I do still want more additions, we
are woefully light in numbers and a few more injuries then exposes ourlack of cover and that is when we will be torn apart. Still time in the window so fingers crossed a few more are signed up.

I watched every game i could last week & the same pattern with a lot of teams they held out & held out against superior opposition but each one found & way to score then go on to win because the lesser team didn`t have the quality to come back. that`s us if we go 1 or 2 down we haven`t got the players to come back

I was at the Spurs game and to suggest we “matched them” up until the sending off doesn’t reflect reality. Spurs were camped in our half and totally controlled the game despite playing in second gear. Spurs were winning the midfield battle easily, which is why I think Shelvey got frustrated and stepped on Alli.

Atsu aside, none of our creative players looked like scoring.

        agree 100%
did we have any ideas or tactics ….corners? shots? awful game

  • Wor Lass

We should be looking to win at Huddersfield. It`s set up just as Rafa likes – we`ll soak up their pressure and catch them on the break. I fancy another 3-1 to the lads.

    • TheNutJob

      you`re crackers

      • Wor Lass

        Pot, kettle etc …

Thanks to Merino we have Shelvey Mk2 but without the emotional dynamite. So we will go out and play what we hopefully be a thrilling game of football and record our first victory. By the way, if Rafa doesn’t give Jos a start on Sunday he may in the EFL cup game on Wednesday so we will all be able to see him. I will be there and expect at least another 50.000 of you to accompany me!
