Newcastle have discovered the identity of their three group stage opponents in the Checkatrade Trophy on Wednesday afternoon.

The Newcastle United reserves have been pitched against Port Vale, Oldham and Crewe.

The competition kicks off with a regional group stage (North and South) involving 16 groups (eight north and eight south) of four teams – each with a single Category One Academy club.

The tournament format sees Newcastle play all three group games away from home, as do the other Academy sides.

The first games will be played in the week commencing 28 August.

Group stage winners and runners-up advance to the knockout stage, with ties settled on penalties if the scores are tied after 90 minutes.

All of the 16 Category One teams must name at least six players in their starting eleven under the age of 21.
