Sunderland fans comment on Newcastle signing Javier Manquillo – Worth reading

Sunderland fans have been reacting to news of Newcastle signing Atletico Madrid defender Javier Manquillo.

A transfer fee (rumoured to be £4m-£5m) has been agreed between the clubs and the player arrived in Dublin today for his medical.

The Sunderland fans do have an extra angle on this one, as Javier Manquillo was on loan last season at the Stadium of Light, starting 15 Premier League games (won 1, drew 4, lost 10) and came off the bench on another 5 occasions.

Interesting to read the comments below, not surprisingly a lot of them slag him off (it was the same when signing Colback and Yedlin) and fair to say that Manquillo wasn’t great for the Mackems last season, it looks quite clear that only Defoe and Pickford emerged with any credit from their nightmare season.

Some of the comments are constructive though and suggest that he could have something to offer, with many saying he probably didn’t have a chance with David Moyes as manager. Interesting one comment says he looked better when played out of position at left-back (usually right-back).

Bottom line surely though is that this is a £4m/£5m probable squad player, no Newcastle fan (hopefully) is claiming he is single-handedly going to win NUFC the title/save from relegation next season.

Enjoy.

Sunderland fans comment via their main Ready To Go message board:

‘He’s absolutely woeful.’

‘Thought he was areet me.’

‘If that’s the calibre they’re signing then we’ll be playing them in the championship next year.’

‘He (Rafa Benitez) has a history of signing hopeless Spanish players and that club has a recent history of singing our hopeless right backs (Premier League winning Danny Simpson, DeAndre Yedlin).’

‘I was annoyed when Yedlin joined them, this I just find funny. He’s garbage.’

‘Canny debut but was toilet thereafter.’

‘Ended the season well imo. I don’t think he’s as bad as what a lot of us think or thought.’

‘Looked better at LB than he did RB.’

‘In fairness we were awful, he is good on the ball in terms of comfortable, decent first touch and skillful. It’s his defending that made him so poor and he was quite weak too.’

‘Finished the season playing okay. Thought he looked decent at Arsenal.

His best performance for us was at West Ham away but then next game Moyes dropped him for Jones and he was barely seen again.’

‘Manquillo wasn’t the best right back we’ve ever had and he certainly wasn’t the worst.

He was very much a “Meh” player and we’ve had far too many of those over the last few seasons.’

‘Seems like a desperate signing.’

‘Funnily enough, towards the end of his loan he began to look like a player but overall was poor. I think there is a decent player in there somewhere.’

‘I think people are being a bit over critical because he’s linked with the Mags. He had an okay end to the season.

Not rubbish, but not very good either. He should have played more last season, because Billy Jones is absolutely terrible.

But I suppose the big question is, if we were still in the Premiership, would I want Manqullio to be our right back. Answer – no, I’d want to sign somebody else better.

Be careful what you wish for though, because I said exactly the same about Yedlin & we ended up with Billy Jones. Yedlin would have been a godsend.’

‘He got kept out of the squad because we looked doomed/sunk and he had a buying clause set at something like 13 million euros after 25 games.’

‘Not a full back, not a wing back.. heart the size of a pea…. the Mags will find out though.’

‘He was a massive disappointment, there were a couple of games at the start where it looked as if he might be okay. But he was horrific defensively, never ever closed down crosses. And he wasn’t that great going forward either, he was just fast.

I thought PVA and Yedlin were poor but he was way worse than both.’

‘Knowing our luck in comparison to the mags, I’m fully expecting them to sign him permanently for about 2m and he will be brilliant then go to barca for 50m.’

‘He was really rubbish for us. I don’t know if he’s a bad player though, I always thought he looked reasonable at Liverpool. Hard to judge players last year under Moyes, but in all likelihood not good enough for the PL.’

‘Potential to be a solid fullback imo. Any fullback will look awful with O Shea and Djilobody and Kone as there centre backs.’

‘Who knows. Maybe an ok player with a proper manager. Certainly didn’t have one last season.

Lot of better than ok players from the season before turned to utter rubbish with that useless prat last season.

Too much of coincidence that so many turned so bad at the same time. Even Defoe was woeful by season’s end.’

‘He can’t really square a winger up or recover when they beat him he’s not good going forward his passing is suspect and he’s weak for a tall lad too. Tell me which part of that will be fixed by him playing under your manager and not Moyes?

You might very well end up staying up with him in the team, but he will be average on his best days. I’d be very disappointed if we signed him again even this season for the Championship, put it that way.’

‘I would put him on par with Colback, an average player, nothing more nothing less.’

‘4 million apparently, fairly low risk.’

‘He’s ok, looked decent at the back end of last season. I’d say he’s probably on par with Yedlin.’

‘Thought he was alright to be fair. In a horrific lead balloon side & wasn’t wanted here by the management.

Could tell he had a fair amount of technical ability, couldn’t judge him fairly on the tactical side due to the aforementioned issues. Yedlin has neither, so he’s an improvement on him. Fingers crossed he actually is as rubbish as people think.’

‘To be fair. Moyes would have picked Heather Mills over Cafu if he saw her ‘british’ passport.’
