Newcastle United’s hopes of winning the Premier Section of the Super Cup NI ended on Thursday night in the semi-finals.

The game in Coleraine last night saw an NUFC Under 17s team take on Ghanaian side Right to Dream and it was United who took an early lead with Matty Longstaff’s excellent free-kick.

However, in the 35 minutes each way format, it proved 10 minutes too long, as Right To Dream fought back to score two late goals and knock Newcastle out.

The Newcastle United kids will now contest a play-off for 3rd/4th latter today (Friday) against Chilean side O’Higgins – they lost 1-0 to Mexican side Club America in the other semi.

In the group games, Newcastle United fought back from a disappointing opening Monday night 3-1 defeat to County Antrim, to claim a place in last night’s Premier section semi-final of the Super Cup NI.

Tuesday had seen United get a 9-0 win over Beijing Morning Star United.

Then Wednesday night saw Newcastle beat Japanese side Komazawa 2-0 at Scroggy Road in Limavady to clinch that semi-final spot.

You can watch the goals and match highlights from last night’s defeat here, including Longstaff’s very good free-kick goal.
