Hearts 1 Newcastle 2 – Friday 14 July 7.45pm

I was hesitant to give match ratings tonight because it was just a friendly but we might as well start as we mean to go on!

Elliott 7 – Made a few great saves. Worrying not to see Darlow in the squad though.

Haidara 5 – Gave away a penalty. Luckily the penalty taker had money on a Newcastle win and blazed it over the bar. I suspect that will be his last game for the Toon.

Mbemba 7 – Looked uncomfortable at right back and was moved to CB in the second-half.

Lascelles 6 – A hesitant display but more  to come from him.

Clark 8 – The usual, solid as ever, looked like he had lost weight.

Aarons 6 – Lively in the opening moments but all over the place positionally. Must improve over the next few games if he is to stick around, especially with Murphy coming in (maybe).

Shelvey 8 – Another one who has lost weight, again, the best player on the pitch by far.

Diame 5 – Not great. quiet.

Atsu 6 – Quiet. very quiet.

De Jong 7 – Good on the ball but again, needs more games under his belt to prove himself.

Gayle 9 – Two goals. brilliant.

Difficult to give a real assessment of players in the second half, it was very boring, with wholesale changes.

Perez 7 – Looked lively and fitter, got in behind a few times but his final ball left a lot to be desired.

Mitro 4 –  Rubbish, must improve. If we can bring in another striker then great. £10,000,000 and this guy off the wage bill would be ideal.

Dummett 7 – Solid as ever, should start the season as LB.

Lejeune 6 – A steady introduction to English football.

Saivet 6 – Steady on the ball, we know Benitez likes his holding midfielders so I wouldn’t be shocked if he stuck around.

Armstrong 5 – Too stocky. Very poor when came on, I can’t see him getting much of a chance.

Not enough involvement to have an opinion on the following:

Gamez – N/A

Colback – N/A

Hanley – N/A

Woodman – N/A

Lazaar – N/A

  • Oooh bobbi fleckman

I thought De Jong was very good, better than a 6

    • Cuh736

You already know a match rating is biased when you see “…needs more games under his belt to prove himself”. Apparently he rated them not only on the game yesterday

      • Jonathan Drape-Comyn

what are you actually talking about?

      • Wor Monga

It’s a fair appraisal…he played well at Hearts, but we’ve always known Siem is a quality player who can operate at the highest level…what we need to see is solid consistency in his health and fitness to be able to judge him as a PL regular for us!!!

    • Jonathan Drape-Comyn

      he got a 7…

      • Leazes Ender

You wouldn’t think the pillock was an accountant would you!

      • Oooh bobbi fleckman

        Ha ha, so he did!!!

  • Leazes Ender

    Ashley fancied Ulrika Jonsson.

    • Wor Monga

Just like you fancied Lee Ryder!!!

      • Damon Horner

        That implies past tense?

      • Leazes Ender

You don’t need to jump to his defence on that one you moron.

    • Rich Lawson

She could probably keep pace on the drinks from what I’ve heard

  • Billy Ellwood

Saw some good attacks down the wing from Lazaar

    • Jonathan Drape-Comyn

true, looked sharp for the limited amount of time that he got on pitch.

  • Cuh736

No, Jonathan. Haidara giving away a penalty doesn’t point to his last game at the toon. Same thing I said when people were jumping at Clark for conceding a penalty last year. Defenders concede PKs all the time

    • Jonathan Drape-Comyn

sorry, what? pardon the insult to my intelligence but do you really think that is what i meant?

it is likely to be his last game because he is a squad outcast, much like Saivet, Riviere, De Jong, Krul. Get off your high horse.

      • Damon Horner

do you not consider the inclusion of Saivet, De Jong and Haidara is a way back in? on the assumption the transfer budget is a modest one.

        • Jonathan Drape-Comyn

There is always the chance, yes. However, players are definitely going to go and those named above are prime candidates.

        • nevfur

It’s a possible way back in but is also a shop window to sell

          • Damon Horner

True. I can just see that we are asking for a lot of positions these guys play (CM, CAM, LB, GK and STR) so I thought it could be to test suitability but I suppose for the likes of De Jong it could also be a crash test.

      • Cuh736

You implied he’s on his way out because he underperformed in the game, highlight being giving a penalty away. Anyway, I understand you

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

    Where`s Krul

    • Jonathan Drape-Comyn

not included in the squad… read into that what you will.

  • Lord

Interesting to see Saivet do ok and get a game. Always tarnished by being a Carr signing we never needed but if he’s any good, might actually be useful in that position as cover for Hayden.

I hope we don’t sell Darlow, crazy to sell a decent young english keeper but seems like writing might be on the wall for him.

    • I believe Woodman will eventually be number 1. We keep Elliot and Krul/Darlow with Woodman definitely keeping in the cup run(if there is any), or maybe on loan this year in the Scottish Prem or Championship.

    • Oooh bobbi fleckman

A friendly will never really test the defensive midfielder but the negetive vibe towards Saivet has always been something opined by folk who’d never seen him play.

      • Wor Monga

Darlow doesn’t have a strong enough personality to command in the area, and his decision making proved costly on occasions…which leads to a defensive unit lacking the right sort of confidence in their last line…

…overall he had a first class season for us last season, and it would be very harsh to see him leave, but for Rafa the keeper has to be the main man, and he obviously wants more established experience in that position!!!

  • Si

If Dummett starts thar will be a failure in the transfer market. Has the right attitude but struggles against Premier opposition. This has been one of our weak positions for a few years now.

    • Damon Horner

He’s not a world beater but do you not think we have bigger priorities?

    • 1957

LB has been a problem position for years, Santon was ok there but not a natural. Dummett is a trier but IMO he was poor in the PL last time around.

Rather than this obsession with buying wingers or an ‘experienced’ goalkeeper I wish Benitez, Charnley or whoever would concentrate on buying players for positions where we are woefully short of quality and numbers for me that’s full back, a creative midfield player/10 and a striker.

Gayle and DeJong may hit it off and play well together but would you get a full season out of them given Gayle’s history of hamstring injuries and Siem’s fragility.

      • Harry Gibson

He wasn’t great last time, but the team as a whole was shocking. I think he will definitely be our first choice left back.

    • Dummett is a great full-back against some of the teams like Stoke, West Brom, Huddersfield, Brighton, but not against the Top 6. He has proven to be good enough, but we also need an attacking option on the left. I’m really hoping Lazaar is given a good run at left-back in pre-season. Dummett could also use competition, but from a defensive standpoint he’s one of the best.

  • Mrkgw

Would have liked to have seen Krul given a game. Interesting to see that De Jong did ok.

    • Clarko

I still have hope in De Jong.

  • 1957

Having seen the game, as usual I don’t agree with many of Jonathan’s views.

Mitrovic wasn’t good but he was by no means our worst performer, SloMo and Armstrong were no better and I thought Lascelles was better than Mbemba, even allowing for Chancel playing most of the game out of position.

I particularly like the new idea though that the ‘…best player on the pitch by far’, Shelvey, gets a lower rating than Dwight Gayle.

  • Betty Joe Wilkinson

I see that RICHIE was not playing don’t say he is out already

    • He’s recovering from an operation(as is Hayden), will be match fit by August

    • Clarko

Maybe he would stay if you knew how to spell his name.

  • Taz

Probably get slated for this but I think elliot and Darlow shud be 1 and 2 fk getting another keeper, get rid of mitro he is not a goalscorer, buy some creative players and fk colback ( ( I think he is craaaap)with the other sheeeite off to anywhere that will have them for free….. I sound like a chronicle reporter, the shocking speculation of all the players we r linked with is getting me down

  • nevfur

I have only seen the goals and read the reports but most others seem to say Aaron’s did quite well and certainly hit the bar twice yet only gets the same mark as Atsu who you say was very quiet and barely gets a mention in match reports
