Sky Sports have selected the greatest five Newcastle United matches from the Premier League era.

An ‘expert’ panel has chosen five games from the 22 years worth of games and it is an interesting choice…

One of the matches Newcastle don’t even win but before you start panicking, it is NOT the gut-wrenching 4-3 defeat at Anfield in 1996!

Instead, Sky Sports have included the dramatic four goal comeback against Arsenal, which of course featured THAT Cheick Tiote goal.

For me, the choice from these five matches would have to be the 5-0 win over Manchester United, absolutely tearing apart the best team in the Premier League and with such style.

For younger fans, I would guess that the Halloween special seven years ago must be surely the most memorable and regarded as the greatest.

A game of opinions though and these are the five picked out by the broadcaster.

Sky Sports:

Oct 1996: Newcastle 5-0 Manchester United – David Ginola and Philippe Albert score stunners as United are humiliated at St James’ Park.

Feb 1997: Newcastle 4-3 Leicester – Alan Shearer hits a 13-minute hat-trick including a last-minute winner as Newcastle come from 3-1 down.

Sept 1999: Newcastle 8-0 Sheffield Wednesday – Newcastle record their biggest Premier League win, with Shearer scoring five goals.

Oct 2010: Newcastle 5-1 Sunderland – Newcastle record one of their biggest Tyne-Wear derby wins as Kevin Nolan scores three times.

Feb 2011: Newcastle 4-4 Arsenal – Newcastle come back from 4-0 down to draw, with the late Cheick Tiote scoring the equaliser.

Sky Sports are asking fans to vote for the best of these five matches and you can do that HERE.

Interested though to hear your thoughts below and/or on social media, as to what was the greatest, and whether any other NUFC Premier League games should have been included instead.

What? No Anfield heartbreak (x2)? I’m shocked from Sky..

Liverpool away in 95-96 must be included. Yes, we lost. But we played some fantastic stuff and scored three brilliant goals. There’s a world of difference between “greatest” and “best”. Winning is not everything, which is why football was called The Glory Game in the Sixties. We were sometimes glorious under Keegan when we lost. We were often unwatchable under Smellydice when we won. As a certain Mr Lennon put it: “You may say I’m a dreamer. But I’m not the only one.”

Oct. 1996 : United are humiliated at St. James’s Park.. I thought it was the Manure that were humiliated.

I know it’s petty, as my son regularly tells me, but I can’t stand people referring to Man U as ‘united’. Its disrespectful to any other club with united in its name.

Away wins at arsenal and Leeds 01/02 season would be contenders from me. Maybe the win at home against Man U where Big Dunc scored and absolute taker on the volley.

Away win at spurs when kev came back in 2008.

Last one from me is home win over spurs 7-1 in 1996/97 season. I think that was probably the best I ever saw us play in a single match (other than howay 5-0)
