Newcastle United have announced the first pre-season friendly of the summer.

The Magpies will travel to Bradford City on Wednesday 26 July for a 7.30pm kick-off.

The game against the Bantams had been rumoured since mid-May.

Claims have also circulated that Newcastle will host Hellas Verona at St James Park on the weekend (Saturday 5 August) before the season starts.

Newcastle United say that they will be revealing other friendlies in the coming days and these will include a home game on that weekend (Saturday 5 August).

Hellas Verona have just been promoted to Serie A and if the game does happen, it would see Rafa Benitez come up against his former Newcastle assistant Fabio Pecchia.

Newcastle United official statement:

‘Newcastle United will face last season’s League One play-off final runners-up Bradford City in a pre-season friendly next month.

Rafa Benítez’s men will make the trip to the Northern Commercials Stadium at Valley Parade for a 7.30pm kick-off on Wednesday, 26th July.

United haven’t faced the Bantams in a competitive fixture since March 2001, when goals from Carl Cort and Clarence Acuna earned the Magpies a 2-2 draw at what was then known as the Bradford & Bingley Stadium.

Newcastle’s Alex Gilliead and Haris Vuckic both spent time on loan with Bradford last term.

Ticket details for next month’s game will be announced in due course. The dates and time of this fixture is subject to final confirmation with the relevant authorities nearer the time.

Newcastle will also announce details of further pre-season friendlies in the UK and in Europe – including a home game on the first weekend of August – over the coming days.’

A possible return to Ireland has also been heavily reported, with Newcastle going for a week’s training camp last summer, which culminated in a friendly against Bohemians.
