Great news for Rafa Benitez as Newcastle star confirmed available for pre-season training

Rafa Benitez will have been a relieved/happy man on Sunday morning, with news overnight that DeAndre Yedlin will be available for pre-season training with the rest of the Newcastle squad.

The right-back looks set to start as first choice next season, having improved as the Championship season went on and Newcastle missing the extra attacking edge when Yedlin was out injured.

The Newcastle defender got star billing in the USA’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Venezuela on Saturday night.

The friendly was in preparation for two World Cup qualifiers against Trinidad & Tobago (Friday 9 June) and Mexico (Monday 12 June).

However, DeAndre Yedlin will then have a three week break before meeting up for pre-season training with the rest of the Newcastle squad on Monday 3 July.

Rafa Benitez had feared his pre-season preparations would be disrupted by Yedlin’s involvement in the CONCACAF Gold Cup this summer, the tournament running from 7-26 July.

However, Bruce Arena has now named his 40 man preliminary squad and only players from that squad can be named amongst the final 23 who will take part in the Gold Cup – that final selection needing to be made by 27 June.

The Gold Cup training camp will meet on 25 June but the great news is that DeAndre Yedlin will not be involved, the Newcastle player missing from this 40 man preliminary squad named below:
