Chancel Mbemba has dedicated a rare international goal to former teammate Cheick Tiote.

On Monday Chancel Mbemba captained DR Congo as they won 2-0 against Botswana in a friendly, which was in preparation for a crucial game this Saturday (10 June), when DR Congo had an African Cup of Nations qualifier against Congo.

Bakambu gave DR Congo a 20th minute lead, before Bifouma equalised on the stroke of half-time.

The lead was restored on 54 minutes when Bakambu got his second goal of the game, then Mbemba made sure of the win when scoring in the final seconds to give a scoreline of 3-1 to DR Congo.

After the final whistle though, the Newcastle defender’s thoughts were all focused on former teammate Cheick Tiote who collapsed and died on Monday, when training with Beijing ENterprises FC.

Chancel Mbemba via his twitter account:

“This goal is for you Cheick Tiote. We will  never forget you. RIP”

For Chancel Mbemba on a personal level, we await to see if he plays any part in Rafa’s plans next season.

Sidelined by the Newcastle boss for most of the season, Mbemba only started one Championship game in a six month period.

However, due to injuries, the DR Congo defender started five of the final seven Championship matches, including scoring his first Newcastle goal on the last day of the season, helping United clinch the title.

Prior to getting those late chances, Chancel Mbemba came out with a slightly off the wall offering.

Chancel Mbemba personal statement via his Twitter account – 17 March 2017:

“Despite my minimal playing time this season I am here and not giving up.

“I continue to train ardently and seriously and I will not give up until I find my place in the team.

“My wish is to come back stronger than ever and satisfy you, my fans, as I was able to do last season in the Premier League.

‘Better is the end of a thing than its beginning, better a patient mind than a haughty spirit’.
