Relegation meant leaving the likes of Paul Merson, Michael Owen and Mark Lawrenson behind.

So there were some compensations…!

However, August will see Newcastle fans once again experiencing the delights of match predictions from the likes of this trio.

Just to whet your appetite though, have a look at this table of Mark Lawrenson predictions for the current Premier League season:

mark lawrenson

It is funny that whenever Alan Shearer says anything vaguely pro-Newcastle he gets criticised as being biased, yet Mark Lawrenson and others go relatively untouched.

In case you missed it, have a look at the top of this table and see what his predictions have been for Liverpool in the 36 games so far.

Lawrenson has predicted wins in 26 of their matches, draws in 10 of them, and defeats in…none of them.

For West Ham v Liverpool on Sunday he has forecast a 1-1 draw and that then leaves only the final game of the season when it is Liverpool v Middlesbrough at Anfield.

Clearly he won’t be predicting an away win for the Smoggies and so Mark Lawrenson will have forecast an entire season without Liverpool getting beat.

Who did he play for again…?

I met Lawro at a charity do once and he was a nice bloke. Maybe that`s what he should stick to! He was a good player in his day, though.

  • Marveauxless

The writers on this site are so bitter. There are only 4 teams who are more than 2 places outside of Lawrenson’s predictions and he’s only predicted 6 Liverpool games incorrectly out of a possible 36… really not that bizarre

  • Doug Dacre

Lawro is a really nice bloke, and an excellent player in his day. I can’t see why anyone would have a go at him, or question he doesn’t want to go against his club.

  • Rich Lawson

He was a good player(his defensive pairing with Hansen is underated) and his weekly predictions on BBC footy site are generally better than the celebrities he competes against but he always looks so weary and miserable, few smiles would help his profile !

  • Malcolm Fisher

Didn’t KK appoint him as defence coach at sjp? What a disaster !!! Got a face like a bulldog chewing a wasp, sorry bulldogs

  • S.G.M.

What was the point of this piece?

  • Whickhamrobbie

palace .soton and mackems apart he is not far off . and i agree with S.G.M whats the point and more importantly what do Villa and Prutton think ?

I recommend the mag writers live in another country for 12 months. Some much needed perspective. Ruud Gullit did have a point about the goldfish bowl. Just seem to be constantly looking for enemies on this site
