There are reports on Sunday morning that Newcastle are looking at Andre Gray.

The Burnley striker signed from Brentford for £6m in 2015 and with only one year left on his contract now, the striker has turned down the possibility of an extension to that three year deal.

Andre Gray turns 26 in June and has a very similar profile to Newcastle’s Dwight Gayle who is now 27.

Like Gayle, the Burnley striker has gone right through from non-league football to the Premier League, showing that you should never give up.

Released by Wolves as a kid, Andre Gray played for both Hinckley and Telford before scoring a load of goals for Luton in the National League.

Two seasons (2014/15 and 2015/16) in the Championship with Brentford and Burnley more than showed he could handle that step up, in 87 league starts he scored 42 goals and grabbed 14 assists.

His first taste of football in the top tier with Burnley has seen a decent year, in 25 starts (plus six from the bench) he has scored nine goals with also two assists.

When you take into account that he is playing for a team who rely on a resolute defence as the basis for their survival, his goal total is decent. Only the relegated clubs have scored less than Burnley’s 38 goals in 37 matches.

The Mirror claim that Burnley will sell as the forward won’t sign a new contract and that Tottenham are also interested in Gray, as well as Newcastle, but with Champions League football and money lying ahead (and to offer), you would imagine Spurs to be looking to shop at a higher level.

As for Newcastle, if there is any substance in the claimed interest, then you could see possibilities.

Maybe playing with Dwight Gayle, Newcastle could have two hard working strikers who would both get goals, as well as doing the dirty work as well.

In terms of it being a deal Newcastle could potentially pull off, you can also see it as achievable.

Newcastle are almost certainly going to have to take risks with any signings this summer, in terms of their age/lack of experience, maybe injury concerns, and so on.

With Andre Gray he is an ideal age but does have only these 25 starts in the Premier League so far, plus he doesn’t sound the brightest. Twice getting into trouble after posting stuff on Twitter and the FA getting involved

Reading up on him,  I also see he is/was (no idea if still current…) going out with one of them from Little Mix – but not one of the two band members from South Shields!

    When does the Rafalution start?

    • Steve Smith

      He’s not french.

  • Jimblag23

No thank you, this ignoramus is simply not good enough.

    • Scott wood

So who would you want rafa to go for but keep in mind that some of they player’s we’ve been linked with will want stupid wages i.e over 100k a week

      • Jimblag23

Players better than Andre Gray. When’s he impressed you?

  • Tony Mann

He’s a decent player who has done well in a mediocre side but – and for me, it’s a BIG but !! – his temperament may be questionable – trouble with the FA etc. Talented though he may be, do we want another Dyer, Bowyer, Ranger, Barton mentality in the our club ?

For me the wrong Gray, would love us to sign demarai gray from Leicester. This guy has pace and talent would be great with Ritchie on the opposite flank. We would offer a better chance of regular first team games more so than Leicester or Liverpool

Can a person really change after using the words die and burn in describing in a lovely way that gay people were everywhere. No matter how good players are I think on this one it may be best to give him a miss we buy the excess baggage that comes with him and the abuse of other fans also organizations having a pop at us

Live in London and have watched Gray many times when he played for Brentford. Good pace but goodness me, for a striker, his shooting is abysmal. Would agree with Tom about signing Demarai Gray though. Also would love to see an early move for Ramirez from Malaga and not hang around like we normally do. Young, strong, quick and has a good eye for goal and available for £30 million less than our latest quality link, Deeney and same price as Barnes. Ramirez is a different class from these players. Will be difficult though with other clubs chasing him.

Sandro Ramirez the ex Barcelona player? Could be worth a punt if the price is right. Or staying with Spanish football, how about Munir? Currently on loan at Valencia from Barcelona.

Another day, another rumour. Most likely something planted by his agent to try to drum up interest, not for me can’t see him being an upgrade on what we have, remember Mitrovic scored 9 in Steve’s relegation destined team.

Graham must be expecting a change of tactic from Benitez next year when he talks about Gray playing with Gayle…can’t see a team setup with two strikers next year.
