Newcastle United interested in signing Andre Gray – Reports

There are reports on Sunday morning that Newcastle are looking at Andre Gray.

The Burnley striker signed from Brentford for £6m in 2015 and with only one year left on his contract now, the striker has turned down the possibility of an extension to that three year deal.

Andre Gray turns 26 in June and has a very similar profile to Newcastle’s Dwight Gayle who is now 27.

Like Gayle, the Burnley striker has gone right through from non-league football to the Premier League, showing that you should never give up.

Released by Wolves as a kid, Andre Gray played for both Hinckley and Telford before scoring a load of goals for Luton in the National League.

Two seasons (2014/15 and 2015/16) in the Championship with Brentford and Burnley more than showed he could handle that step up, in 87 league starts he scored 42 goals and grabbed 14 assists.

His first taste of football in the top tier with Burnley has seen a decent year, in 25 starts (plus six from the bench) he has scored nine goals with also two assists.

When you take into account that he is playing for a team who rely on a resolute defence as the basis for their survival, his goal total is decent. Only the relegated clubs have scored less than Burnley’s 38 goals in 37 matches.

The Mirror claim that Burnley will sell as the forward won’t sign a new contract and that Tottenham are also interested in Gray, as well as Newcastle, but with Champions League football and money lying ahead (and to offer), you would imagine Spurs to be looking to shop at a higher level.

As for Newcastle, if there is any substance in the claimed interest, then you could see possibilities.

Maybe playing with Dwight Gayle, Newcastle could have two hard working strikers who would both get goals, as well as doing the dirty work as well.

In terms of it being a deal Newcastle could potentially pull off, you can also see it as achievable.

Newcastle are almost certainly going to have to take risks with any signings this summer, in terms of their age/lack of experience, maybe injury concerns, and so on.

With Andre Gray he is an ideal age but does have only these 25 starts in the Premier League so far, plus he doesn’t sound the brightest. Twice getting into trouble after posting stuff on Twitter and the FA getting involved

Reading up on him,  I also see he is/was (no idea if still current…) going out with one of them from Little Mix – but not one of the two band members from South Shields!
