Very interesting looking at the way the bookies have priced up the Premier League, both in terms of winning it AND relegation.
When it comes to winning the league, maybe surprisingly it is Manchester City who are 9/4 favourites, with champions Chelsea only 7/2, along with Manchester United.
Despite being clear second best this season, Tottenham are as high as 8/1. Clearly the bookies believe that the higher spending power of the Manchester clubs will eventually prevail.
When it comes to Newcastle United, they are made 10th favourites along with the likes of Stoke, Palace and West Ham, priced at 750/1 to spring a Leicester like surprise.
Whilst Newcastle won’t be winning the title next season (…probably), the odds reflect how the bookies see the club as capable of bouncing back at any time as one of the clubs towards the top. Potentially in the future able to challenge top four/top six etc. Whereas the likes of Burnley, West Brom, Watford etc are seen as less likely of springing a surprise, always having a limitation of how high they can ever potentially go.
However, when it comes to the odds for relegation, they on the other hand reflect the potential of things to still go badly wrong at Newcastle United if Mike Ashley messes it up yet again.
In the last seven seasons Newcastle have been in the Premier League they have been relegated twice and came close on another two of the other five occasions.
Reflecting that, Newcastle are sixth favourites to go down at 4/1, with only Huddersfield, Brighton, Burnley, Watford and Swansea rated more likely.
The likes of Palace, West Brom, Stoke and Bournemouth may be ranked as the same as Newcastle or less likely to do something remarkable but they are seen as safer/more stable when it comes to making sure of staying up.
Let’s hope in a year from now the odds are reflecting a successful season under Rafa Benitez (and Mike Ashley!).
