Matt Ritchie already has 11 goals and 7 assists in the Championship and only defenders Dummett and Lascelles have started more league games.

The winger also has four goals in cup competitions making it 15 for the season, remarkable for a winger.

Earlier in the season Matt Ritchie was outstanding and arguably Newcastle’s best player, as they went on a run of 15 matches where they won 13, drew one and lost only one, form that set the club on the way to what looks a likely automatic promotion.

He may have had a dip for a few games mid-season but his workrate meant that he still played a decent part in the team, even when his more productive/creative side wasn’t firing.

However, it is when the going has got tough on this promotion run-in that the tough have really got going…and Matt Ritchie has been immense.

Easily Newcastle’s best player over these past 14 Championship matches detailed below.

As well as his fantastic workrate every match, the winger has scored seven goals in these last 14 games, plus he was cheated out of what would have been the winner at Birmingham when wrongly flagged offside, plus of course Wednesday night’s fiasco against Burton.

In these past 14 matches he has scored twice in the 4-0 win over Rotherham, scored the winner against Derby, Burton and Wigan as well as the opening goal in the Huddersfield win, plus getting the equaliser for a point against Bristol City.

The likes of Perez, Diame and others really need to take a look at what Matt Ritchie is contributing, a lot of it through sheer hard work and a willingness to run and take a chance on the ball arriving in dangerous areas.

With eight wins, five draws and only one defeat in these last 14 matches, I think it is fair to say that without Matt Ritchie, Newcastle wouldn’t have got a significant number of those points, as well as others earlier in the season of course.

I thought it was Ciaran Clark, Dwight Gayle and Jonjo Shelvey fighting it out for player of the year but I now think it is Clark just edging out Matt Ritchie with Gayle & Shelvey in third/fourth.

If Ritchie keeps this recent form up in the remaining half dozen games then there will be only one winner.
