Carlos Carvalhal has called the home support amongst Saturday’s 28,883 attendance ‘absolutely fantastic’.

Clubs such as Leeds and Aston Villa had been given 4,600 tickets but South Yorkshire Police had limited Newcastle fans to only 3,100 for unspecified reasons.

A crucial game for the home side against promotion favourites Newcastle saw Hillsborough only just over two thirds full of its claimed capacity – the reality though is that the actual working capacity is currently in the low thirty thousands, as parts of the stadium remain closed off and other areas are allowed a limited capacity.

Despite this, Carlos Carvalhal wants to build on Saturday’s atmosphere and says ‘I hope this kind of environment can stay in the future’.

Despite beating Newcastle United 2-1, the Sheffield Wednesday Manager says ‘I think we can do better in the future and improve the team’.

Despite beating Newcastle, the stats below show that Wednesday actually scored with two of only three efforts on target, whilst United had eight, however most of those were from distance and didn’t really test the home keeper.

Apart from the late consolation it was actually Jonjo Shelvey’s outrageous effort from the halfway line that came closest, only to hit the bar with the keeper beaten.

Carlos Carvalhal:

“The fans did absolutely fantastic, we felt the presence of them and this makes a massive difference.

“I hope this kind of environment can stay in the future because we need it to win games, absolutely sure.

“This is the football I like, a more connected game, having more of the ball, we had a good reaction when we lost the possession, created chances, scored goals – it’s the football that I like.

“We will try to do better and better.

“Even though we played very well against Newcastle, I think we can do better in the future and improve the team.

“Together, like this, we will win more games.”
