Ultimately, it’s the players on the pitch that let us down but I believe today Rafa Benitez had his worst day in the office for us. Can’t believe I’m saying this.

If he does mess it up it has to be said.

He has over thought it, changed it all about only three days after we had really clicked and looked dangerous for the first time in donkeys.

It happens, players have mares and managers have mares. Both together is armageddon at this stage of the season.

Any momentum we gained in truth was hoyed oot the window.

To not include Mitro or Mbemba is just baffling.

Diame getting games and continually playing like a drunken sailor with a heavy head and banana skin boots is frankly doing my effing head in.

The acres of space from the poor positioning of Yedlin and Lascelles today was infuriating – but in truth we were very bad at the back all over.

Ipswich are rubbish and they made us look like we were playing in deep sea diver boots. They fully deserved the win.

Fully flipped out when Gouffran comes on as a sub on 70 ahead of Mitro…

Then Ritchie being taken off for Mitro when we needed quality balls into the box!

Numerous diagonal balls from right back to our 5 foot nowt Atsu to not even get close to?

Shelvey playing most of the game taking the ball off the toes of the centre backs,  or they would just aimlessly loft it forward to nobody.

From the ultimate peak performance to the very worst in the space of three pigging days.

If Jesus was a Geordie he would have sacked the resurrection off, climbed back in his tomb and rolled the stone back.

If we blow this it will be up there with the most embarrassing capitulation we’ve mustered and there is a bloody long list of them.

Lads, get your balls out of your lasses Armani handbags, strap them back where they are supposed to be and finish this damn thing off. It’s still in your hands, just.

COME ON MAN!

Regardless of whether you agree with Rafa’s selection or not, surely those selected should have beaten Ipswich.

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

well they didn`t & never looked like winning

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

Derby have scored, me pray mats working

  • Stick Plant

If we mess this up I will drive Rafa back to Spain myself after this debacle. What has Mitro got to do to get a fair crack?

    • Geordiegiants

He has had his chance more than a few times. He is krap basically.

      • 1957

I could sort of accept that Benitez doesn’t play him for that reason except for one word…Diame. Arguably worse than Mitrovic, more starts and less impact.

        • Geordiegiants

I couldn’t agree more, Diame is arguably our worst player and Rafas worst signing.

  • Tino o

A win on Monday will do it if Huddersfield fail to beat Fulham on Saturday! It’s Newcastle we never do it the easy way!

  • jack

He shouldn’t have changed the team ,Diame is useless , goufran too , He won’t play two strikers , why?Mbemba , mitrovich , and Atsu should have started today

    • Peter Graham

      Atsu did.

      • jack

Atsu. And mitrovich have hardly started many games , he keeps picking goufran and diame , this is what I meant , and why is it always one striker

        • Peter Graham

Ok Jack. I agree with you by the way. I think the exclusion of Mbemba in particular was a disgrace. Especially in light of our captain’s continued terrible form. Just like most managers he has his favourites, but in this case it could cost us big time. I mean would anybody be seriously surprised if we didn’t win another game this season? And before the critis of this type of comment start, this is not negativity, its called realism.

          • jack

I think it’s possible we might not win another game too , I think the treatment of mbemba and mitrovic, is pretty bad , all season

  • Mrkgw

It begins at the back and for me, Elliott and Mbemba have to come in for Darlow and Lascelles. Elliott is vocal, an organiser, Darlow not so. Lascelles is error prone. Mbemba adds stability.

    • Andy Mac

Agreed Darlow may be the shot stopper but organising a shaky defence is not his forte. Love to see the Dilsh start and Lascelles nowhere to be seen.

  • Albert Stubbins

Should have started with same 11 against Leeds- simples!!

  • Vodkamagpie

I believe in the last 7 seasons of the championship, teams that have won 26 or more games have finished in the top 2, we have 26 wins

  • GlasgowMag

agree totally why not play the same team as Leeds not usually judgemental on Rafas team selections but he got it completely wrong today thank god for Derby PS hope Diame does not play again this season hopeless doesn’t cover it!!!

    • Geordiegiants

He has got to be Rafas worst signing for us, even worse than Sels. I can only think he is trying to keep him going, for getting money back in off him.

  • cornishman2

Rafa that team selection was as bad as it could get. We played as well as we have for ages against Leeds….until the subs came on….so why change it? It smacks of meddling for the sake of it and it blew up in our faces.

    • Malcolm Fisher

Rafa is the manager and not Ranieri correct

  • magpiefifer

We might have to win 2 games out of 3 to clinch promotion – after today I really can’t say that we will be capable!
I have to agree with many of the comments on Rafa’s selection – really cannot understand Mbemba’s demotion, and Diame’s inclusion.
I pray that Clark will be fit for next Monday.

    • Peter Graham

Mbemba with Clark, if fit, please.

  • Andy Mac

There are those who believe that if you criticise the Great Man he’ll sulk and take his ball home with him. Yet he acknowledged last week he was still learning and hopefully he’ll have learned enough today to bench Lascelles for the rest of this season. In Rafa we trust but that doesnt mean he’s above criticism so get over it !

    • Malcolm Fisher

He´s had 40 odd games to learn and still not getting right, still wholesale changes when he needs a settled side

  • Damon Horner

I agree with all that is said about team selection and continuity but do you realise by saying that the team shouldn’t have changed what we’re actuallly asking for? The players swapped out were Gouffran, Anita, Perez and Mitrovic (also Mbemba) every one of those players negatively scrutinised by the fanbase.

    • love toon despite

Indeed Damon you’re making us doom and gloom merchants point very well. Welcome aboard

      • Geordiegiants

Ha ha lol. That’s a funny comment. I’m not be sarcastic it really made me giggle, as I’m a glass half full fan 99% of the time.

  • Andy Mac

Ok it was another bad day at the office which only goes to show that Rafa isnt infallible. He gets things wrong. We all love him but he aint the Messiah walking on the Tyne.

What is needed is a pragmatic approach to these last few games and I’d suggest a halt to all these rumours/gossip tales about who is coming in or going out ? That’s not helpful to anyone as all players in the squad right now have the ability to show the boss what they’re made of and to convince him they’re worth a squad place next year?

    • Viru leckworth

Exactly. Players probably read these notices and it is hardly inspiring to glean that fans don’t rate you. Hold back on negative comments. We really need to pull together to get over the line.

  • Steve.C

Let face it if we do go up and we will just. Half of this squad has to get the boot

    • TubbyMunky

Only half? I’d be happy with 3 quarters of them looking for new clubs.

      • Steve.C

Your right bud ,I just didn’t want to sound too pessimistic

  • Whickhamrobbie

    PATHETIC. Pathetic display,Pathetic players,Pathetic management,Pathetic club.
Look at Ipswich players who wanted it while our lot were a shambles .
If we go up (which i now doubt ) automatically we will be lucky as i simply cant see us winning any playoff games .

  • Michael Lisle

Spot on. Some great points made. I have only watched Yedlin a few times and don,t rate him as a defender. I realise that Shelvey has been one of best players this season but this deep role “taking the ball off the centre backs toes” does not work at a good level and opposition can read the long passes. It was refreshing to see Mbemba bring the ball out of defence v.Leeds and it was a puzzler why he was left out as he looks a class above the other centre backs.
