Newcastle 4 Preston 1 – Monday 24 April 2017 7.45pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle:

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“Should have been done weeks ago but who cares.

“To be promoted at the first attempt with two games to spare is a fantastic job from Rafa, particularly considering we had no investment in Jan.

“A big summer ahead but lets enjoy the next few weeks. You rarely get to as a newcastle fan.

“Howay the lads!”

Paul Lyon:

“Job done! Well done Rafa and the lads!

“The match itself is academic really, just chuffed we got the points needed to secure promotion, delighted!”

Ben Cooper:

“It was a game which summed up our season.

“A struggle at times, should have done better for much of it but comfortable in the end.

“Praise be that paul gallagher and his acrobatics were invited to the party.

“It was time to go when they played rocking all over the world and people sang along.

“Proud of our efforts tonight, embarrassed by our musical tastes. HTL.”

Scott:

“I don’t care we are there hahahahaha.

“Great win, now on to the prem.”

Leazes Park Ender:

“There we have it. Job done.

“It’s had its moments, for sure, but overall what a great job Benitez has done.

“The nerves have been evident in recent weeks. This probably should have been wrapped up at Easter, but hey ho, we’ve done it with two games to spare.

“It was a convincing win tonight, despite the PNE leveller getting fans jittery. Atsu just before half time was crucial and then the red card has killed it. A deserved red as well, given he played the ball like a goalkeeper.

“Enjoy the moment now. Everyone will. It’s been a bit of slog but we can look back at it with great pride.

“Hard work starts here. We are back in the Premier League.

“Owner and MD must not now shaft Benitez. That’s the clear message. Retaining him is essential.”

George Stainsby:

“Nowt to it, really!

“Ahem… Next, we go on to the World Fruit Pastille Not Chewing Championships. Ayoze Perez with a last gasp not chewing of a green one.

“There’s work to do, but unlike the cloud cuckoo land, hands over ears nonsense of the past, I really think Rafa knows what to do next. Let’s hope he’s allowed to. But let’s enjoy the moment.

“Have a good night/week/weekend.”

Nat Seaton:

“GET IN!!!

“Finally we’ve got over the line…

“Goodbye Championship, thankfully it’s been a short stay and we’re back where we all feel we should be.

“Can’t wait for next season!!!!”

Jamie Smith:

“Mission accomplished!

“I had hoped for a bit of style to seal it and ultimately this turned out that way, albeit after some hairy moments between Preston’s equaliser and Atsu’s vital second goal.

“The relief as the lead built second half was tangible. This has been a battle throughout and I will not miss the Championship one little bit.

“A very tough league negotiated and now begins a nervous summer of seeing to what extent the squad is allowed its essential revamp.

“For now though, let’s have a beer and enjoy it.”

Jamie Swan:

“Objective achieved! Enjoy the moment and worry about the rest later.

“Another wobbly first half and another strong second half.

“Nice if we can finish with a bang and win the title. Probably won’t like but who cares, it’s going to be a hell of a party at Cardiff.

“Congratulations to the gaffer and the lads.

“Rafa is THE man and showed his class by even shaking the lads’ hands taking the net down at the end – a mark of the man.

“Happy days.”

I wonder who the next manager is going to be….?

Interesting comments on his future at United by the big guy.

    • Desree

Yeh, he sounds pragmatic in the interview. Lets face it, everyone knows the story about the frog and the scorpion, Rafa being the Frog and Ashley being the Scorpion. Give Pardew a 12 month contract – We will finish 5th!

      • Leazes Ender

No everyone doesn’t know the story…. is it Aesop…. please enlighten!

        • Desree

A scorpion and a frog meet on the bank of a stream and the
scorpion asks the frog to carry him across on its back. The
frog asks, “How do I know you won’t sting me?” The scorpion
says, “Because if I do, I will die too.”

The frog is satisfied, and they set out, but in midstream,
the scorpion stings the frog. The frog feels the onset of
paralysis and starts to sink, knowing they both will drown,
but has just enough time to gasp “Why?”

Replies the scorpion: “Its my nature…”

          • Leazes Ender

            Thats nice…. thats Ashley

          • Geordiegiants

I hope Rafa isn’t on here reading that story.

      • HappyToons

Geordie black and white daft Marcel Marceau has just changed from a sad face to happy then I read the name P-A-R-D-E-W. Poor Marcel will be in a noose for next season if that ever came true.

    • HappyToons

Whose the big guy? Rafa is only 5ft 9 ins, unless you’re a dwarf?

    • Scottpaige

      Yawn

    • Geordiegiants

I don’t think he will stay either judging by his comments tonight after the game.

    • Mark Davies

Jeeeez we are up blueface. Cant you enjoy one night of fun. What is wrong with you

  • HappyToons

    HAPPY TOONS AT LAST!!!

    • Leazes Ender

      Clown

      • HappyToons

        Thanks, that’s a true comment!

      • Mark Davies

Why is he a clown. Enjoy for once you doom monger idiot

        • Gallowgate Dave

Few too many celebratory pints there Mark? Or do you just need your glasses?

        • Leazes Ender

          look at his avatar….

  • david mills

Just glad its finally done. Time to say ta taa to the beer gut league

  • 1957

At long last our stay in the Championship is over, despite the final scoreline the first half was tense as our defenders went missing and little Vern was taken to the cleaners.

Clark has had a good season and Gayle scored heavily up to his injuries but overall player of the season is Ritchie for me. Has had some poor games but always gives 100% commitment, we need more players with his attitude in the team next season.

  • nevfur

Get in at last, we couldn’t just cruise it lol. Had to have a first half wobble and make Preston look like Barca for a spell but got it together and finally we are there. Very Happy. Worry about next season during the long boring rumour laden summer. Rafa Benitez, Rafa Benitez Rafa Benitez

  • Andy Mac

If you accept that Brighton have had three dress rehearsals in this during the past four seasons then its understandable that we were just learning as we went along. As Rafa mentioned even he was learning during the season so a runners up spot is not too shabby considering where Norwich and Villa are right now ?

Let’s hope we can play without fear for the last two games of the season and it was good to see The Dilsh back where he belongs.

  • Toon Army AZ

Mission accomplished! Equal parts happy and relieved. Kudos to Rafa and the players for a job well done. A promise kept for a change – Isn’t it refreshing?

  • Jezza

Relief more than anything. I’m just glad we’ve got back up at the first attempt because it would have been a lot harder to try and get up next season and we could have ended up spending years in the wilderness. There are now huge question marks over what happens next with Ashley and Rafa but for the moment I’m just going to try and enjoy the feeling. Much better atmosphere at the match last night but still nothing like promotion clinching matches of old. Very tense first half and our defence looked very vulnerable. I would have been happy to go in 1-1 at half time. Big improvement in the second half. The sending off and our third goal ended the match as a contest and the final 20 odd minutes were very enjoyable.

    • Andy Mac

Yes TRY and enjoy it Jezza cos it’s not every day we’re in the top two at the end of the season ?

      • Jezza

I certainly enjoyed the closing 20 odd minutes and post match celebrations last night, Andy. That bleeding arctic wind wasn’t so good though but. It’s the coldest I’ve ever been at a match in late April it has to be said!

  • Whickhamrobbie

That idiot Cundy slated us for ONLY finishing second but who cares we are up .
Enjoy the last two games whatever happens
