Newcastle 1 Leeds 1 – Friday 14 April 2017 7.45pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle:

Paul Lyon:

“Came to life after they hit the bar in the first half.

“Pushed as much as we could to win the game and got what we thought was going to be the winner.

“Hayden was excellent and we missed him after he visibly needed to come off.

“There’ll be a defensive inquisition on the training ground into the how & why we conceded the equaliser.

“’Settle for promotion now? Yes please!”

Ben Cooper:

“Top notch performance tonight and you cant ask any more of the team than what they gave tonight.

“Except perhaps that they score more and concede less.

“I enjoyed the game for once though and although the late goal was a sickener it was still more fun than most of the season.

“I hate friday night games. I am always mortal.

“Howay the lads.”

Scott:

“All the graft all the effort.

“Disappointing.

“Be glad when season is over. Gutted.”

Leazes Park Ender:

“What an agonising way to drop two points. That game was over.

“Leeds celebrating like they had won the champions league, but even though they had their moments we’ve been all over them.

“Scoring more than once was the problem and Lascelles switching off at the end to let Wood score the leveller.

“It’s becoming a slog as we set up camp on the promotion target line.

“The reaction on social media will be gloom. Certainly it isn’t over just yet. Four points could be enough, but first place looks gone. We’ve had the slightly tougher run in.

“This season was never going to be another 09/10 promotion. It’s been a harder slog.

“There seemed something in the air today when Huddersfield scored that 96th minute dodgy penalty.

“On to the next one. Fingers crossed they get this done.”

Kevin Christie:

“Totally deflated. What a sucker punch!

“I felt that the Sheff Wed defeat had killed off our title hopes – no doubt about it now. Second place beckons. Probably about right.

“Thought we were up for it and focused from the off tonight, so, credit to Rafa & Co but very disheartening that we couldn’t see it through.

“Perez put a shift in tonight but his end product is simply non-existent. Mitro also can’t finish to save his life but was very effective tonight – worth his weight in gold for the nuisance factor he provided.

“We’re always much better playing with a central striker as a focal point, bringing others into play, playing with width, pace and directness. Ritchie was immense again.

“Rafa’s controlled passing game just doesn’t work….at least not in this league or with the players at our disposal. Nor is it entertaining.

“Tonight’s game was the best spectacle of all our televised games this season and was genuinely enjoyable to watch – just a pity about the result.

“Premier League, here we come…. but we’ve done it the hard way!”

Toon Bano:

“Feel absolute rage and sick at the same time.

“How the hell can the officials come up with 5 minutes injury time? How? There were no injuries 2nd half!!!!

“How the hell can we have no defenders in the middle of the box with seconds left??? How? What are we, a bunch of 6 year olds??

“2nd half was completely dominated by us and if weren’t for Rob Green having the game of his life we would have won easily.

“Let’s not forget the clear penalty on Mbemba either. We have been cheated out of so many points this season, it’s a total disgrace.”

Nat Seaton:

“We blew it!

“Not often I’ve said this when we’ve lost this season but we deserved to win.

“Played better than we have done for a while, especially in the second half.

“Poor injury time management cost us 2 points but more than that a great victory over an old rival.”

Paul Patterson:

“There’s been a robbery on Tyneside. Unbelievable!

“And to whoever ran on the pitch in stoppage time- buffoonery!

“Best performance of the season and deserved three points. Can’t believe we didn’t kill them off.”

Jamie Swan

“Biggest mugging ever.

“For me our best home performance for donkeys. By a mile.

“Where the ref got 5 mins stoppage time from is a mystery and on cue Colback chops someone down to allow a free kick on 94 mins and 30 seconds.

“I could pop.

“Look we’ve been rubbish at home this season, today we had pride, passion, aggression everything you want from us and just didn’t put them to bed. Gutting when you truly deserve it and get nowt.

“Mitro was excellent, Mbemba too. Can’t really knock anyone.

“Get us out of this league.”

  • Coach Clagnut

Amazing how many times the opposition have ended the game with 11 players on the pitch. 2 double bookings and a straight red wouldn’t have been surprising.

This league stinks and has more than a whiff of corruption wafting from the officials.

  • Grahame Johnson

The tool who ran on the pitch was a Leeds fan, shame as a good few were amazed at how welcome they were in pubs etc and didn’t have police on their case. I would like to say our support was canny, lovely to see about 3 different songs on the go at one stage also the leazas going a bit radge.

  • Tykemaster

A newly opened thai restaurant in Newcastle near St James park heard a huge cheer and some 30 or so patrons that had left the game earlier starting singing 2-0 to the Newcastle only to find a couple of minutes later that it was the Leeds fans noise and it was 1-1. True story.

  • Leazes Ender

Five minutes of injury time… and no stoppages….. did the officials watch stop accidentally.

    • Jezza

Adding five minutes of injury time was clearly a very wrong decision and it cost us 2 points. It is just the latest in a long line of utterly farcically bad refereeing decisions that have dogged us throughout the season. When you factor in things like the penalty against Burton and Notts Forest away it’s hard not to start thinking about conspiracies.

      • Steve Smith

But we’re a “big team that intimidates referees and get all the decisions in our favour all of the time”….

      • Leazes Ender

I’ve looked on a Yorkshire site and some seem to think that the extra minutes were for Shelvey ‘mucking about wasting time in the corner’….. otherwise known as winding the clock down….

…. the ball is in play and the clock continues surely the referees in this division know the rules of the game…. don’t they….. Leeds fans don’t!

        • Jezza

Well if that’s the case it’s the second shameful, diabolical and utterly inexcusable example of referees not knowing the rules of the game in as many home matches for us.

  • Andy Mac

I keep reading comments from some fans who seem to believe this is a carp league and we’d be better off without it ? Yet somehow or other they conveniently forget what it was like losing fourteen matches on the bounce or the six derby defeats to the unwashed ?

If we go up, we’re gonna be struggling to beat the West Brom’s, Watford’s and Bournemouth’s of this world let alone Citeh, Chelksi and Spuds. Either we bring in six quality players with the emphasis on “intelligence” and “creativity” or it’ll be an uphill battle next season and then you’ll know what a carp league really feels like ?
