Kevin Nolan and Shola Ameobi need another two points to make League Two survival mathematically certain – but both former Newcastle players were adamant they should have had them on Friday.
An error strewn game had seen the score standing at Crewe 2 Notts County 2 in the final stages.
Only for Shola Ameobi to be brought down in the box in the final seconds.
The Notts County players and fans were amazed to see the referee book Shola instead of giving a penalty and very likely victory to the visitors.
After the game, Manager Kevin Nolan said that he didn’t want to say too much because he’d get into trouble but what he knew for sure is that ‘Shola Ameobi is an honest player and plays the game in the right way’.
Newcastle fans may have seen any number of weaknesses in Ameobi’s game when at St James Park but diving and cheating wasn’t one of them.
As for Perez and Mitrovic based on Friday night v Leeds though, it might be a different matter.
“This is another thing about that decision, they have to know the player.
“Shola Ameobi uis an honest player and plays the game in the right way.
“I don’t think he’s been sent off and he very rarely gets yellow cards.
“Shola Ameobi is not a cheat so I don’t know really what to say because I don’t want to get into too much trouble.
“I thought we would have been worthy of the win had it come but I am gutted it’s a 2-2 draw.
“But how good is it that we are talking about that instead of coming away saying ‘we’ve had another loss and we’ve got a lot of work to do’.”
